First of all 542 is a warmup error, not overheat.

And it's usually the thermistors, thermostats, lamps, power supply or connections thereof.

Leave the front cover off that shields the fuser lamp connectors and see if the lamp even comes on. If not, check the lamp for continuity. If that's ok then if you have access to another fuser unit swap it for testing. If you still get the error then the problem is probably going to be the power supply (secondary would be the connection).

Its not sitting under an air conditioning duct is it? Can you reproduce the symptoms in the afternoon?

Got an MP201SPF today with this exact same symptom. Going there tomorrow to open up fuser and check for anything that might have caused that, but if anyone who got this before on this family of machines, any insight is welcome.

    Cheers!

Looks like an AC Driver failure for me, remove the PSU and check the TRIAC on it, which will drive the fuser lamps. Meter it out and check for short circuit between A1 and A2. A new one will cost you only a few dollar on a radio shack.

Apparently it was a one-time situation. A colleague in the meantime placed a new fuser and it's working fine. If I understand correctly, if it was the failed Triac, it would happen right away with the new fuser, right?

There are no remains of unsupported transparencies or anything that might've caused that, so we've no idea.
