    Ricoh MP C4500 Fax

When you fax something to the C4500 you get a ring no answer.
It will dial out but not receive calls. The phone line is working I plugged a phone into the line and it received the call. The only thing different is the fuser has a spot in it and I have disabled the the top tray so paper only goes thru the machine short edge first. The fax tray priority was for tray 1 and I switched it to tray 2. Has the fax modem gone bad?

try to call your cell phone from the fax to see the number sometimes their fax number change and customer doesnt know it, if that doesnt work update the firmware. good luck.
Get your facts first, and then you can distort them as much as you please.

Try changing the fax cable first, I've had a few go bad lately. Make sure it's a proper Ricoh one too, not all of them are wired the same.
It's 106 miles to Chicago. We've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses.

    Hit it.

It's mainly the printer that complains if the paper size and orientations is miss-matched/incorrect. The fax usually continues on.

If I remember the MP2500 fax complains about paper miss-match, orientation or size of paper.

    anyway.....

    [These are for Aust. Telecoms]
Customer may have mucked about with the fax settings and change
o Fax is routed through PABX and manual setting is set to on.
    o Fax/Phone setting instead of dedicated Fax. (Waits for number of rings);
o Tone Dial to Pulse dial ?

Can you do a manual receive when the phone line is ringing ?

    [Test Line Faults]
Send a test fax off to your local telecom company for a FOLDS return test. Aust. is 1300368999
A test fax comes back with all the relevant info of how bad the line and signals are etc....

Plug another fax device into the line and send off some tests...

    have fun.....

Funny you never seem to give enough information.

This C4500 has been working fine for 3 years now Copy/Print/Fax/Scan
The other day the fuser got a spot in it on the side so as a fix until the new one gets here I took all the paper out of tray one, Tray 2 is set with the paper short side first. (The mark on the fuser does not show up in this orientation)
3 Faxes came in and would not print because auto tray switching is of and the fax tray priority was tray 1 I put paper in tray 1 printed out those faxes and then switched fax to use tray 2.
At this point the fax option apparently stopped receiving faxes. It is a ring no answer. (You dial the fax number and it rings at the PBX but the machine never indicates it is getting a call.)
If you plug in a standard phone it goes thru.
The machine also will send a fax fine it just won’t receive one.
This means that either me changing the fax tray priority messed up something or at the exact same time the incoming fax portion went bad (which would be an incredible coincidence!)

What happens if you load paper in tray 1, SEF or 8.5 x 11 R and set the fax priority back to tray 1?

What happens when you load the paper in tray 1 LEF, the way it was working originally?

I might be completely off here but I dont think it has anything to do with the mfp. Just as a test have you tried switching everything back the way it was to see if the problem goes away?

If it doesn't I think you may have a bad port on the PBX. Coincidence maybe at this point but I would also check with a line tester if you have one to check for voltage, polarity and paring.
Ricoh & Microsoft may pay the bills but Un*x saves my ass every day.

Just to let you know, I had the same issue on a mp2500 a few months back. It wouldn't receive but a handset plugged into the TEL line would. Replacing the FCU board fixed it in my situation.

The line should is probably OK if he has tested outgoing and incoming call with a testphone. Of course it doesn't hurt to test another line chord. Next step is to check if there are any RX files stucked in the fax memory. It's also worth trying to reset the fax option (factory reset) after printing the configuration/user switch pages. You can also try to modify the cable and disconnect/remove every unneccessary contact on the plug - that helped me several times. Only the two middle contact on the RJ 11 connector are needed for the line connection.

Btw. what happened if you turn up all fax-speaker volumes? Don't you really anything hear if you call the machine in this state?
