"Preparing an authent. device, please wait" - MP 201

This machine is on its original controller, and I noticed this while replacing the HDD. There's an older thread with this issue, and following the advice there I ordered and replaced the MBU, to no effect. Does the fax board also have to be replaced when you do this?

Has it just started doing this all on its own?

Honestly I hadn't noticed; for most of the call I was updating all the firmware. I did get the message to go away though...

I popped the back cover and switched the jumper cover on the MBU to "off." Then I booted the machine. I turned fax confirmation back on (the parameter setting had gotten erased) and the thing worked fine. How can that be?
