Correct what ever is causing the code and then cycle power off and on.

Make sure there is nothing behind the tray and empty it, then power cycle with main switch.

Turn the machine completely off and unplug it, take all the paper out of the right side of tray one, fill the left side of tray one with paper and make sure the stack of paper is completely straight, push tray one back in, and finally plug the machine in and turn it on and let us know what happens, please.
Crap, that was a long sentence, sorry about that.

As long as the lift cables are in good shape and none of the paper height sensors have been knocked out of place, the most common cause is paper being stuck behind the tray. When you close the tray, it mates with a drive mechanism that lifts the bottom plate to raise the paper stack to the feed rollers. If there is a piece of paper behind the tray it can block the mechanism from being able to supply this drive. Most often cause for getting paper stuck behind the tray is worn feed rollers. Worn feed rollers cause the paper to jam as its being fed. The sheet of paper will only be partly pulled from the tray and as you pull the tray out it causes the sheet to stay behind. When you push the tray back in, it pushes the sheet behind the tray. I would recommend replacing these rollers (3 rollers) Pickup roller AF030081, Feed roller AF031082, and Separation roller AF032080. All 3 rollers look different so you can't mix them up. Each slide off their shaft easily once you remove a small plastic clip on the end of the shaft (removable by hand).

To access the back of the tray and feed rollers, you will need to remove the right side of the tandem tray. To do this, first pull out both sides. You'll notice they come out on a rail. First remove the 2 screws on the top of the left rail. This will allow the left side of the tray to pull out a little more (but will not come out all the way). Now remove the 2 screws on the right rail. Before pulling out the right side, lift up on the tray so that it clears the lock that connects it with the left side. Lift up and then pull out to remove the right side of the tray all the way. Now you have access to the feed rollers and any paper behind the tray. Note* If you can't remove the right side, it means you have engaged the lock, push the right side of the tray back in and try again but lift up sooner before pulling toward you. Follow directions in reverse to reinstall. You'll have to slide the rail to position the screw holes before you can screw the trays back on.

SC 501 = Tray 1 lift error , SC502=tray 2 and so on. You need to power the machine off and back on to clear this error code.
