Hi, Not a technician, but wanted a professional to tell us we're screwed before we move on.

We were sold a Gestetner C7435C off lease with the understanding it was fully refurbished. It was not. The magenta toner started streaking and the fuser warning finally shut the machine down.

A reputable repair tech said it would cost about $1000 to replace fuser and all drums and toner to get it up to running like new. He also has a totally refurbished unit at $1200 and would give us $200 for our pile of junk. So it is $1K either way. Does this sound like he's on the level?

The guy that sold it to us is a crook and never returns our calls. The Asst. DA won't even press charges.

The Tech gave you a reasonable price, in my point of view I personaly think its worth a go, it a great printer, but the choice is yours.

Unless you have it in writing what was supposed to be replaced and can prove that it was not replaced, I don't think you can really do anything litigiously. But I'm not a lawyer.

This line of printer is nice as you can replace all of the consumables and pretty much have a brand new machine. The price sounds reasonable either way you end up going on it. Make sure you get an itemized price list and find out if they have any guarantee on their work (ours is 2 weeks on labor or 1-3 months on purchased refurbished machines). Another thing to look at is genuine parts. Personally, I don't recommend any non-OEM toner for any color machines. Find out if the units are OEM or aftermarket/rebuilt consumables. If there is a choice, go with the OEM as they are much, much more reliable.

I'm sorry you've had a bad experience with a "dealer." Please believe not all of us are that way. Most of us take pride in the work we do and the equipment we service.

This is a good printer. For the price you're paying to get all of the work done as iMind said you'll be getting a completely new printer. I've had great luck with these and with a good dealer you'll be much happier... Good luck on getting the guy who screwed you over to have to pay for what he did.

Fully refurbished in alot of cases means it was checked over and the bare minimum was replaced to make it fit for sale.
Does not not mean it will stay that way for long if some parts were close to yield but not replaced.

It's not really recommended to run machines like this off contract unless you are a very low volume user as PCUs, Devs and a fuser are not cheap to replace.

This is a printer, the fuser and drum units can be purchased as user replaceable supply items. SRP for the fuser is $320. SRP for a kit of all 3 color drums is $151. SRP for a new fuser oil unit is $57. On my calculator this adds up to about half what the 'reputable' tech wants to charge. All dealers have different markups, but it should be in that ballpark.

A trained ape could replace these parts and do a good job of it. Purchase them from a dealer, and do it yourself.
