    GBC Streampunch III punch adjustment

    Hello everyone,
I was wondering if anyone working on Ricoh or Toshiba Production machines could help with an issue we just had come up.

We have 2 Ricoh 9000’s at an account that both have GBC Streampunch III’s attached to them. Customer called in complaining that the punch position was off. They never noticed it before until they split a job between the two machines and then went to assemble the books. One machine punched the die about 3mm farther into the page than the other. Just to be sure it wasn’t something little, we swapped die sets but it did the same thing so we know it is not the dies set itself. It is a machine (or GBC) issue.

We could not find any adjustments in either the copier manuals or the GBC manual. It seems that it just needs to have a lead to trail punch adjustment done but we are at a loss trying to find one.

If anyone knows how we can adjust this to have both machines punch in the same spot it would be very helpful.

Thanks in advance for anything you know.

I have had some good fun with these myself !

but basically there are 2 infeed sensors just after the entrance guide that control the timing so you need to make sure the machine and all the accessories are completely level otherwise this will slow the paper down. There were also some spacers added too these sensors to improve reliability

Depending on the configuration you need to make sure you have the correct firmware

Having just finished fighting with one of these for 2 months, I guess I'm my district's expert on them.

There is only 1 adjustment - it sets how far the die slides into the machine, therefore it adjusts how the punches are centered top to bottom when looking at a normal book. The depth of the row of punches (left to right looking at a book) is fixed by the back gauge gate closing to stop and align the paper during punching and is not adjustable

The procedure is section 4.2 of the Streampunch III (VR34) manual

Try either replacing the streampunch motor or replacing the duplex motors. If the very edge of the corner paper coming out is dog eared even just a mm, the duplex or entrance guide of the streampunch is to blame. That duplex has been modified with different idlers so that area could be to blame (it really wouldn't surprise me). If all else fails have the customer run the machine on "thick mode" to slow it down and see if it makes any difference.

There is no adjustment on how far the the unit punches into the page this is fixed.
This could be down to many things - the punch unit position, the punch clutch (which has recently been modified), as mentioned previously - the duplex unit, GBC to machine level ect.....

Isn't there adjustability of the backgage for the punch location from the edge of the paper?

hmm...... I thought side to side (centering) was adjusted at the die set position cradle.

Great Scott you are right! There is an adjustment for the die set front to rear, but you can adjust the lead to trail edge hole position. (kind of) The back guage assembly is held on by three screws. You can loosen them and push up or down on the whole assembly to slightly adjust the hole positions. You may only adjust for a couple of mm's, but between two machines this may be enough. Split the punch from the main copier and you will see the screws I am talking about. If I remember correctly there are two on the left and one on the right when looking at the feed in side (lower) after splitting it away from the copier. I ran into this problem before a few times and most of the time adjusting one unit works. Sometimes you have to adjust the both units in opposing directions to get the holes even, but it worked for me every time. Good luck!
