Cleaning unit on MPC drums

Hey folks,

We just had to replace 3 out of 4 drum units in an MPC2800 today. And even though we use black drums as color drums it's still about $500 / £315 were talking about. Of course it would come to that sooner or later, but these drums have made K-59000, C-47000 and Y-47000 pages. That's not a whole lot for drums that should be about 120k.

The problem seems to be the cleaning. The blade can't take too much so eventually it starts sipping toner through, which then smears on the charge roller which will eat the drum like an english breakfast. If you happen to be there early enough and clean the charge roller the drum will work longer, but who has time to sit there like an inhouse tech, right?

Does anyone have a fix or something for this..? Maybe a way to tension the cleaning blade? Any percent longer life I can get out of these drums is welcomed with open arms. Thanks!

There's been a problem with the developer on these models. If you get one that continually chews up drums, replace the dev unit and re-dev it. That should sort the problem out.

I agree with tonermunkeh, I have had this happen on a couple of machines now - changed the dev unit and dev and it went away working fine again.

I haven't looked at the cleaning unit on the new series, but the first generation (MPC3000/3500 etc) had a plastic shaft inside the collection coil of the cleaning unit that was very thick. It took up most of the volume of the collection coil area.

When making long runs of high density coverage you could see a corresponding overflow of toner from the cleaning unit in the high density areas into the charge roller area. This plastic shaft could be cut out and removed (except for about 1.5 inches of the driven end) which allowed for more toner to be augured from the cleaning unit.

This was just one of many attempts to prevent charge roller contamination.
