Ricoh Aficio 6000 User Code Pop-Up issue

Hello,

I have a Ricoh Aficio MP 6000 copier, using the 6500 Pop-Up driver, so that users will be prompted with a user code to print.

We have a series of codes programmed in the Address Book. Whenever I enable User Code under the User Authentication Management in the copier, and then enable 'User Authentication' under Advanced Options within the driver, I neither get a pop-up prompt, nor a print job. The job history says "access restricted," which makes sense since it didn't receive a code.

I'm assuming that my setting on the driver is wrong somewhere despite having tried with 'User Authentication' both checked and unchecked (while User code was enabled on the copier).

I had to re-load this printer on a different server and haven't been able to figure out how to get the prompt back. Can anyone help me with this one?

Thanks,
John

Clean uninstall of old driver(s)

Make sure that you do a "clean" uninstall of any previous driver for this MFP.

In your "Printers and Faxes" window, not only delete any previous driver, but under "Server Properties", delete any old driver(s).

Do a reboot, then re-add the printer.

There are utilities available (not from Ricoh) that will do this for you and to a greater extent, but that's not normally required.

Ken,

Thanks for your response. When I go to do this, is the correct setting to enable the prompt simply to check off "User Authentication" under Advanced Options on the driver, and make sure that the 'User Code' is enabled on User Authentication Management on the copier/printer, like I think it's supposed to be?

You shouldn't need to enable authentication in the driver properties; it should be left off.

I'm curious as to how you got a driver with pop ups, though.

These need to be customized by an authorized dealer; Ricoh doesn't make the tool available to the public.

Are you using XP, Vista, Windows 7? Are you using 32 or 64 bit? Also, are you using PCL5, PCL6, etc?

Thanks.

Drivers for older products are available on the TSC site. I have been able to modify a MP6000 PCL driver for pop-up, but the MP6001 will not work. Japan has stopped allowing for the modification of its drivers due to the responsibility it puts on the company. Also, Pop up drivers are not supported acording to my last conversation about them with TSC.

Our (useless) service provider is IKON. This will be changing at the end of this year (entirely different topic altogether). When they called into Ricoh to ask how this can be done, they provided the 6500 driver with the pop-up capability. Of course, I've kept a copy of it in case I needed to reinstall it for any reason. However, it's very finicky to get working.

The server that's hosting the printer is Windows 2003 server and it's serving all XP clients.

I was able to customize the MP6000 PCL5e driver for pop ups, using the tool that Ricoh provides its dealers.

Please PM me your email address, and I'll send it to you.

You should need to do no further configuring to the driver other than setting up the appropriate finisher and paper sources.

As I mentioned in my earlier post, the key is a clean installation. If it's not, you can pick up bits and pieces of previous drivers, causing all kinds of wonderful jokes to come your way.

Please. please, please, NEVER use the "New Driver" button under the "Advanced" tab that Windows provides. It DOES NOT work as you think it would! Sadly, that is not documented anywhere that I know of.

How were you able to mod the 6000 driver? I downloaded the tool but it only seems to go up to the last generation of machines. I need a pop-up driver for the MP3550, 6001, MP-C 3300, MP4000 & 5000 but I wasn't able to get any of those to show up in the drop-down menu. Am I missing something...?

Make sure that you're using version 2 of the tool; version 1 won't work with a lot of the newer machines.

Also, not all of the newer drivers are customizable, even with version 2 of the tool - at least not yet.

It's version 2.0 -- I'll keep trying. Talked to my Ricoh rep -- he's thinking there's another tool listed somewhere on TSRC that will work with the current machines. I'll see what he comes up with.

Thanks for your help!
