Does it happen if you scan it upside down? (meaning, is the problem only at the bottom of the page? If so, try cleaning the glass and mirrors.)

Are you scanning in color or black and white? If color, try black and white and see if it shows up any better. Also try increasing the resolution.

If it still won't show up any better, try using the "Pale" setting on the scan screen.

If by portrait you mean SEF, check the paper size sensors in the ARDF input tray. If they are full of dirt the machine may interpret that as you are feeding shorter originals.
I make this claim based on the assumption that prints from that machine look fine.
That was a rather weird mirror effect in the pictures you shared. Makes them kind of useless, but oh well.

Okay. Have heard too many people say MP 4000 when talking about the MP C4000.

Check & clean your laser slit glass between the laser and drum unit!!!....I bet you have one side of the glass that has toner on it and can't transmit the laser through the glass!

Is the problem only via ADF?

Talking Re: Ricoh Aficio MP 4000

Do an ADF Input check SP 6-007 and check that all the original width sensors are operating correctly.

It sounds like the sensor for original width 3 or 4 is not working properly (6-007-06, 6-007-07). I can basically reproduce the image you posted when i block the original width 3 sensor.

If you open up the top cover...you will see 4 or 5 black hook looking flags that trip the sensors when the paper goes over it to tell the machine was size paper to reproduce. in the sp mode input check you can test the bit switch to see if they are working or not. 0 means not detected and when you push the hook/flag down the last number should jump to 1, which means paper is detected.

If one of them is not working it won't detect that its an 8.5x11 and actually cut off the bottom image of your sheet.

Also make sure there is not a piece of paper under the adf left over from a previous copy job that is covering the slit glass....yes i have had customers do that.

    Hope this helps!
