    Ricoh 3800CP Toner Issue

I'm working on a Ricoh 3800C printer, where the customer changed out the Black toner cartridge before the printer prompted them to do so. And then they decided that the old one wasn't empty enough, so they put the old one back into the printer. After the printer finally told them to Add Black Toner, then put the new toner cartridge back into the printer.

The printer is intermitently displaying "reset black toner", and that seems to do with how the top clip is retaining the cartridge, but the issue at hand is that the printer constantly displays "Add Black Toner" now.

If the cartridge is taken out and shaken a little and replaced, the printer will go into a "Loading Toner..." mode, but at the end of the toner refresh, it sticks on the Add black toner message. With this message up, the printer will not print at all.

I've done a manual toner refresh through the service menu, but I still have the same issue.

    Any other suggestions?

Sounds like you have problems with the toner transport system, which works with under-inflation on these beasts. First at all, remove the black Drum and Developer unit. Look into the hole and you will see the Toner Pump at the inner Backplane. Remove the rubber hose from it an vac it out to assure, that there is no agglutinated toner blocking the way. Then do forced Toner Supply again and look what happens. If this does not help you, replace the toner pump as step 2

herrmann is on target. Vac the hose all the way back up thru and over the top of the LD Unit. (Sometimes clumps prevent delivery) pinch the hoses and ensure suction is felt from the toner supply section, free air flow from vac.

Keep in mind, that these units actually have TWO toner supply pumps. The one that Herrmann speaks of, CAN be suspect however, Toner delivery pump located near the toner supply unit has ALSO been primary suspect.
The diagphram (Similar to an air rator device on a fish tank) wears out and cracks, allowing air seepage so no pressure is present to push thru toner.

One indication of this problem, is no presence of toner at the "K" Pump, after you vacuum the lines. If no toner is present there, just above the "K" developing unit, replace the toner delivery pump FIRST.

The pump that Herrmann speaks of, requires removal of the LD Unit.

If you must replace that toner pump, be careful to NOT damage the LD unit ribbon cables, they are extremely fragile, and can signal some SC's if bent.

Securing the pump just above the Developing unit, with one particular screw is extremely tricky, (No direct access thru main drive section) so,
prepare for patience and a good flashlight for that one.

    Hope that helps!

    Good luck.

Today, I changed out the developer unit to fix another problem, and it seems to have fixed the issue with the toner supply. If the errors come back, I'll be sure to note these fixes to give them a try.

    Thanks for the feedback!
