+1 for checking with Gutenprint. Failing that then postscript would be needed.

I also got a customer to print with Guttenprint. I believe on newer versions of MacOS you don't need to install anything - it should do it right out of the box.

A few things about the Gutenprint drivers:

1). Not all models are supported. I found that out when I needed to print from the "forgotten" Mac notebook to a Ricoh MP C2050.

2). Not all features are supported, as Tonnerboy mentioned. I ran into this with a customer who had his one Mac set up with Gutenprint drivers, and he was happy. Then along came the need to add Ricoh "user codes" so as to track and control color printing. The Gutenprint driver didn't support user codes - it got a little ugly.

3). Performance will likely be much slower, and color output may not be what you expect.

    and

4). No manufacturer will support you if you go down this road. AFAIK, they will all tell you " PostScript or nuthin' ".

Of course. If your customer needs to use any advanced feature (like, for example, user accounts), you need to sell the PS option to the customer.

Trouble is, the customer who is too cheap to get real PostScript to begin with is the same one who wants to restrict color usage using codes!
