We only have maybe 20 Samsung 7600 and 4300 in field but at least 12 of them have needed the factory Toshiba HDD replaced
I expect within 2 years the other 8 will also.
Have others had as much problem as I have?

We've had the same issue. Between the fuser belts exploding and the HDD's failing we haven't made much money on this series.
Why does every customer think they're the first one to ever say: "you've been here so much we should get you an office, ha, ha, ha"?
I'm tempted to just proactively swap out the untouched drives with WD ones.
Also. I have tried 500GB in past with no luck
So been using 320GB drives from old Konica Minolta's
Is it correct that needs to be 320GB or did I just get unlucky first time I tried a 500GB. At this rate I'm worried I won't have enough 320GB drives
4580's and 5370's have this issue all the time.
I also use the 320 gig drives, format them in an external case and then do the hdd recovery.
Very time consuming.
I need to replace more HDDs than feed rollers on some types of machines.
so yeah, yet another samsung issue
be ready for them toshiba drives to fail. what i did, is format the drive with the firmware/hdd image from HP(which now owns samsung printing).
i take that drive, make an image of it on my pc thru reflect maricum program, then buy a bunch of WD 320 which is fine, you can use 500gb as well but only if you restore the 320gb image onto it.
restore the image on the drive, and then you have a fresh OS on the drive, no need to go thru the HDD formatting saves you about 2 hours. make sure you update the firmware too before making an image.
I just start the process and go out to a cafe takes longer if you watch it
I've a 2680FX with a broken HDD - I purchased the exact model (Toshiba, 320GB) and replaced it.
When trying to do the "System Recovery -> Format HDD" it stops after ~10% and says HDD Failure.
My question now:
Brett stated that he would format the new HDD in an external case.
What partition table and which partitions need to be created?
The old Disk has broken sectors, seems to have a non-standard partition table (could be due to the bad sectors).
the command lsblk show the following partitions on the old disk (but i don't know which type/fs they are):
I was hoping that the system recovery tool could handle a blank/new HDD and install it's system on it.Code:sdj 8:144 0 298,1G 0 disk ├─sdj1 8:145 0 2G 0 part ├─sdj2 8:146 0 1,9G 0 part ├─sdj3 8:147 0 10,1G 0 part ├─sdj4 8:148 0 1K 0 part ├─sdj5 8:149 0 103,2G 0 part ├─sdj6 8:150 0 10,1G 0 part └─sdj7 8:151 0 151,7G 0 part
Very grateful for any hints on how to proceed!
Thanks
Ulrich
I've got a failing hdd in my C2680fx too.
I ordered an original Toshiba 320GB replacement, it is recognized but the System Recovery Task "HDD Format" fails at ~10% and says HDD Failure, replace.
Then - based on reading here that one should not use toshiba hdds and to make sure i didn't get a broken one, i got a WD Blue 320GB HDD.
Now i have the same problem as with the toshiba replacement - hdd format fails at arount 10% and reports broken HDD.
@Brett
In your post, i read that you pre-formatted the drive using an external case - could you provide details on what you did there?
Do you have any suggestions what to try next?
- Change SATA Cable?
- RAM Replacement ? - seems to be a 128MB DDR - but hard to get
- Mainboard -> prohibitly expensive and not available for the my model
- ???
Thanks for any hints - i really would hate to replace the machine just because i cannot get the hdd replaced ..
