Yes. The other alternative is to replace the HDD with an already erased HDD of the same physical size. I don't think the storage size would matter. Can you confirm that this is a notebook style HDD?
Yes, from a picture of the part (960K29230), I don't see a way to get power to the HDD. So I will need to purchase a USB to SATA/IDE adapter kit.

OK sunds correct becasue pictures of HDDs from parts vendors showed IDE. However, I know that many internet sites use just any picture - not the actual HDD.
