there are several types of communication error .. "host to host" "firewire" do you have a fault code ?
have you tried a reboot and try again you may have tried too many times and gotten locked out

most of the time i have seen when this lever is missing the copier always thinks there is paper in the bypass tray cause the ramp is always up blocking the photo sensor ... you can hold the spring...
