AR-M317 Can't scan to email

I've got a Sharp AR-M317 that I'm trying to set up for scan to email. I've tried using my own SMTP server but the username is too long for the web interface, and when I try to use Gmail or Outlook.com emails for it it says "Authentication type is not supported" when I go to test it with the user name. Without the SMTP authentication I can connect to the server alright but I can't get anywhere when I put the username and password in. I've heard that a firmware update might help but I can't find a firmware file or anyway to upgrade it. Is this something that a service tech can do? I've attached a screenshot of my SMTP settings page and the error I get.
