Sharp AR-M277 dark side when using ADF

I went in to address a dark shading on one side of the copy when using the ADF (glass copy works fine). Here's what it looked like:

I cleaned the glass and mirrors, then I get this:

    m2771.jpg

You can see how part of the image literally disappears. I figure I must have knocked something out in the optics, so I play around with the mirrors for a few minutes. I can moved 2nd & 3rd mirrors around a little bit in their slots... a little less than a millimeter. I push them all one way, and get the copy back to what it was originally. I push them the other way, and I get the above again. But I can't move them far enough to get rid of that shading on the end.

    Any thoughts?

BTW - the part messing up is on the front (control panel) side of the machine.

I've seen that happen on other Sharps. It is either the CCD (not likely as copies off the glass would do the same thing). Possibly bad ADF hinges, or bent scanner frame.

I have seen this before and it has been the right side hinge guide that the hinge sits in. It will crack and the lid does not sit flat.

Check ADF hinges... most likely broken. As far as the optics go, you can push the mirrors up to the alignment plates in the back to make sure the are in place, also make sure the rubber guides are not worn out on the bottom of the mirror assemblies, if they are it will cause dragging issues. I would check these issues, first, before looking into ccd's, laser units, etc.

With the slit glass on the right side, the mirrors must be perfectly aligned. Off the glass, the misaligned mirrors will not show as much.

I can't see it being a hinge, because then the copy would just be darker or lighter on the side. But you can see from the second image, that the image actually disappears... there's a very definite change as if the image is 'off' the mirrors. I'll look in the manual to see if it describes how to align the mirrors.

BTW - this ended up being a mirror alignment problem. I went through the manual and adjusted the mirrors as instructed. I have to adjust back and forth a couple of times on the scan mirror, but it all lined up in the end.

    Thanks.
