Thumbs up Sharp AR-M450u 2001 w/FN6 changin laser

I have never changed laser unit on this model or any similar( i have changed them on AR200).
I understand it would be easy if it were a later serial number and without an FN6 which is assembled to right hand side of machine. The serial number ends in 1 so I guess it is 2001 which according to Somgeek would make it a more difficult task. Any suggestions to make it easier (sledgehammer + chainsaw?) are welcome. Thanks for your input. Frank/ActionPhotocopy

axyun, Here is the procedure that you asked for. When you get to step #5 you'll be able to see into the laser area. If there is a "U" shaped light shield fitted around the laser unit that can be easily removed with only two screws, and has mylar flaps hanging down, then you have a new style engine. Good luck for you. You won't have to remove the power supply or most of the other things listed. If you see a crossmember fitted around the laser with screws coming in from the outer frames, you can be sure that you have an old style engine, and an additional 3 hours of work. If so, be careful to get everything reassembled properly as you go. This is where most techs go wrong. They start to hurry once the laser is in, and forget to plug in the toner motor, or a fan, or one of the leads to the power supply (this from experience), and it will take you twice that long to find the thing you missed.

    Tiger- Laser Unit Installation
    Old Style Engine

To remove the central cross-member below the laser:
    (For L6-10. 28 March 2007)
    Remove:
    1) rear cover for cassette base (4 screws, base AC power, engine AC power, fax AC power, fax I/F cable, phone line),
    2) AR-FN6 or AR-MS1 (5 screws, 2 brackets, 1 connector),
    3) rear cover (6 screws, small cover),
    4) right side cover (2 shoulder screws),
    5) laser PWB protection bracket (4 screws). At this point confirm that it is an old style engine.
    6) power supply (laser connector CN16 on PCU & tie wrap, 7 power supply connectors, 4 screws, spade connectors to main power switch [diagram on frame]),
    7) laser fan assembly (2 screws, 2 connectors),
    8) left door assembly with duplexer (3 screws, 1 ground screw/wire),
    9) toner cartridge, developing unit, drum unit,
    10) registration assembly (registration cleaner, 2 screws, 1 connector),
    11) front door
    12) fuser (2 latches),
    13) delivery cover (2 screws),
    14) front left cover (3 screws),
    15) front right cover/op panel (6 screws, 1 ground wire),
    16) left rear corner post (2 screws),
    17) engine top cover (4 screws, filter, cover),
    18) delivery turnover (timing belt, 6 screws, 2 ground wires, 3 connectors, 1 harness loop),
    19) front right gray cover (2 screws),
    20) front door rail,
    21) front left gray cover (5 screws, let cover dangle),
    22) PCU (11 connectors, 2 harness loops, 3 screws, 1 ground wire),
    23) right rear corner post (1 screw, 1 hook),
    24) noise filter/AC connectors (2 screws, 1 harness loop),
    25) HVT (2 screws, leave high voltage terminals connected, let board dangle),
    26) central cross member below the laser (4 screws, front out first),
    27) remove laser unit (2 screws). Note position of front laser squareness adjustment.

    Re-Install:
    1) laser unit (position laser same as the one removed, 2 screws),
    2) central cross-member below the laser (rear in first, 2 screws front, 2 screws rear),
    3) HVT (2 screws),
    4) noise filter/AC connectors (2 screws, 1 harness loop),
    5) right rear corner post (1 hook, 1 screw),
    6) PCU (3 screws, HVT ground wire to top corner, CN15, CN1, CN2, CN3, CN5, CN7, CN9, CN8, CN11, CN13, 2 harness loops,),
    7) front left gray cover (5 screws),
    8) front door rail,
    9) front right gray cover (2 screws),
    10) delivery turnover (6 screws, 2 ground wires, 3 connectors, 1 harness loop, timing belt),

    17) front door
    18) registration assembly (1 connector, 2 screws, registration cleaner),
    19) drum unit, developing unit, toner cartridge,
    20) left door assembly with duplexer (3 screws, 1 ground screw/wire),
    21) laser fan assembly (2 screws, 2 connectors),
    22) power supply (6 spade connectors to main power switch, black wires to engine right, white wires to engine left, blue connectors bottom row, white connectors middle row, gold connectors top row [diagram on frame]), (4 screws, 7 power supply connectors, laser connector CN16 on PCU & tie wrap,
    23) laser PWB protection bracket (4 screws),
    24) right side cover (2 shoulder screws),
    25) rear cover (6 screws, small cover),
    26) AR-FN6 or AR-MS1 (5 screws, 2 brackets, 1 connector),
    27) rear cover for cassette base (4 screws, base AC power, engine AC power, fax AC power, fax I/F cable, phone line),

    Thumbs up

Thanks a million Blackcat. It is actually a June 2002 machine with first serial #s being 265 so I am hoping that means it is the easier version but all the info you have given me should help quite a bit. The service manual shows a few picture which are supposed to be disassembly instructions but I think it is fairly inadequate. i had ordered the laser ending in ds11 which I should have tomorrow morning.
I see that there is a right angle adjustment(64-01) and off center adj. that is done when changing LSU but am wondering if necessary if not being used as a printer, only for copying. Frank

When removing the LSU, make a mark where the LSU position is on the small side scale. Fit the new LSU to that same mark. In all the LSU's I've replaced on this model, there has never been as issue with off-center etc etc. Just run copies of the Sharp Testchart to see how it looks/aligned.

Bloody hell Blackcat..... fair description of removal/replacement. Even a tool like me could follow that one.

Like wazza says. Just line up the new laser in the slot like the old one and you should be good to go.

I had to follow up on a couple of these, and I have a really crappy memory, so I have to write it down. =^..^=

    Thumbs up

I replaced the laser unit yesterday morning and it was the old style. I am not anywhere near as good as most you and started to get discouraged after removing a number of parts according to a detailed step by step how-to posted by Blackcat . The customer was already willing to buy another machine and I was an inch away from telling him I would arrange for another machine and give him a smaller loaner until delivery.
Then I started staring tat the control joint plate which is behind power supply and under Laser unit. The plate is held in by 2 screws on the front and 2 screw on the rear of machine. I removed the PCU board and the HV board behind it to get to the 2 screws on the rear. The front access was easier. I angled the plate down and removed the laser and installed the new one not knowing there would be an alignment problem when i was finished.
this saved me from removing a still decent list of other parts to remove.
I turned on machine and got " install developer cartridge". "Shit , what did i do now", I wondered. I went to the rear with my trusty little flashlite and shined it between the PCU and HV boards and ther was one connected trapped there. I pulled it out, connected it and "voila" the machine worked and copies were fine in every way.
Thanks to all who have helped me on this ,especially Blackcat as I couldn't have done it without your input. WHAT A TEAM!!!. My best to all. Frank/ActionPhotocopy

I like your idea of the sledgehammer or chainsaw. It solves all your problems in just a few strokes.

    Congratulations on a successful fix.
