As for the version code, you may have a corrupted rom or the print contlroller mave have been dip switch set to emergency update.

If it were in the emergency update procedure, it would explicitly be stating so, and the screen would be mostly white. I agree with everything else you said.

I have had what your are describing displayed when the HDD is going bad on these models. Could be as simple as re-flashing the firmware though.
