    AR M550 add paper display

We have two copiers that have the same issue tray #1 does not lift. no error code, displays says add paper. I installed another drawer as a test in both machines and everything works. I put the bad drawers side by side with the good one to see if something is different and i can not see anything missing or bent or broken, i even had two more sets of eyes look at the drawer comparison and they didn't notice anything different any thoughts ? Thanks

Are you sure an error hasn't been stored, then that tray isolated? Check your error log for F3-12.

To reset feed tray errors use sim U15. You've got nothing to lose by trying it.

How about media size and type settings? Are you sure it isn't asking for a specific non-standard size or type? =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
    1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
    2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
    3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
    4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
    5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

blackcat thanks for reply. No error code and of course no jam code. I cleared 14,15 and 16 heck I even thru 17 in there, I even removed the front panels from both the one that works and the bad one to see if anything is out of place or bent. I removed the back panel of the copier also to see if something was out of place when the drawer is inserted we didn't see anything different from the good one and bad one also I tried the bad drawer in another copier no error code displays add paper. Just for the heck of it I replaced both lift motors and still the same. Maybe cheaper for us to buy replacement drawers. blackcat thanks again.

Sorry that I don't have anything additional to offer. Maybe somebody here can sell you a tray scrapped out of a dead Dragon I. =^..^=

Alright, i think we need to get Lieutenant Columbo for this one . Another two set of eyes, nothing bent, everything looks the same.
There is something you are missing that is eluding you at the moment. sometimes its the simple things that we overlook and it comes back to bite.
Don't give up on this yet. Its a tray and it is easily removed and installed. Post when you solve.

Re: AR M550 add paper display

I searched on the net and found the service manual for this machine. I see that tray 2 has the identical parts as tray1. is tray 2 lifting ?. When you open the drawer what message is displayed, is it the same as add paper or close tray. I do not work on these machines, but as i look at the diagram, there is no electronics on
the drawer itself, therefore the sensor actuator that detects the tray is broken or out of place. All the sensors and motors and solenoid is on the machine rear,if i am correct. so look at all the projections from the tray that goes into these sensors to activate them and see they are ok.

page 68 and 69 of the service manual has the diagrams and wiring names

TANSET Paper feed tray 1/2 (Tandem tray)
    detection signal
Paper feed tray 1, 2 (Tandem tray)
    insertion detection

T1S PWB T1S PWB Defector PWB (Paper feed tray 1) Paper tray upper limit detection and
    paper empty detection (Paper feed
    tray 1)

As Subaro said, check for a broken paper empty actuator.

Re: AR M550 add paper display

If it lifts and says add paper it is the paper empty sensor.

If it does not lift it is the upper limit sensor for the tray.

Both of these sensors are on the paper feed unit.

Re: AR M550 add paper display

Since you swapped out the try the main body (sensors and motors) should be good. The issue is probably with the white plastic pivot guide (feed roller and pick roller are attached to this. Tape the black plastic actuator up (paper empty) does add paper message go away. If yes then there is a flag( White plastic) at the end of the pivot guide which is the upper limit flag this is probably broken. The other thing you might want to look at is there is a heavy spring on the shaft for the lift up wires Sect 25 item 30 in parts manual , I have had high volume machines were the spring is not held in place because the plastic guide part breaks where the tail of the spring is kept in place, this puts tension on the shaft for paper lift, but I can't remember what problem it gives, I think it was paper empty, because the paper was not lifted evenly.

also the white pivot guide is sect 24 item 5.

Curious to know if this problem has been solved. As i examined the sm futher, i see the fault should be found easily as all the checks and info is there for the tech to look at.
below is pg. 69 of the sm. I think faxman28 know this machine well and made some points i think should be checked. According to below, two sensors must be activated before the tray lifts. paper detect and tray insertion. page 70 shows paper detect and paper remaining sensors on the tray itself. those sensors has to be checked or the wiring that goes to them and the actuators or flags as they are called also. Spanky is right on then as to the sensors. If the tray insertion and paper detect are working , the the sound of the lift motor should be heard.

    B. Operational descriptions
    (1) Paper feed operation
    a. Preliminary operation before paper feed
    1) Set paper in the tray, and insert the tray into the machine. The tray
    sensor turns on.
    2) The lift-up motor operates to lift the tray.
    3) The paper upper limit sensor turns on to stop the tray at the specified
    position

pg 70 shows these sensors on the tray....
    Others 1 Paper remaining quantity
    sensor PWB
    2 Paper remaining quantity
    detector
    3 Paper feed trays 1 and 2
    sensor
    4 Dry heater
