The call was for "Add Paper" indications, and I had imagined somebody sending B5 paper size print jobs to the printer, but it's nothing like that. That would be too easy.

Instead, when the machine is ready sometimes it will just not raise the trays. So if you open all 3 trays then close them, they all continue to say empty and don't lift. Wait, it gets better.

As I was pinning out the paper feed sensors at the H-Logic board a print job came through and attempts to print from tray #1 LT-R. No big deal, right? Except tray #1 was sitting on the floor. No tray #1 installed, but the PF clutch engaged and attempted to feed some imaginary paper. Apparently none of that imaginary paper hit the next sensor because it jammed. How do check the quality of imaginary paper?

So as I am buttoning up the machine and presenting the workorder, the enduser points out that the LCF paper shift mechanism had been moving around erratically, without any paper on the left side of the LCF.

All it takes to temporarily clear the condition for a couple hours is to reboot, let's say 6 times a day. So all my symptoms are focused on the presence or absence of paper, paper lift or paper shift. Could it be anything but the H Logic board? =^..^=

we had a 557 doing something similar and found a loose connector on one of the boards. re-seating it fixed the problem.

I got pulled off this call, but spoke with the tech onsite.

About a week earlier I had been out for light bands in the feed direction. There was developer on the removable laser slit glass. After investigation I found that the developer cover had not been fitted properly, and it was spraying developer out the back of the unit. I cleaned up all the developer I could see, but apparently not enough.

The developer had worked its way all the way down through all three feed units, creating myriad current paths through the developer. I'm kicking myself for not disassembling a little further on the first call. I certainly would not have imagined that set of symptoms. =^..^=
