So, these feeders seem to have every reason to double feed originals... Replacing a new set of rollers doesn't seem to work; stretching the lift springs under the sep roller doesn't seem to work. I'm told that the DFP Clutches are known to be defective and can cause this...? What gives?

We've had good success with using the sep roller from the e5540c series feeders instead. I don't even stock the grey sep roller anymore. It's made of a clear green material and seems to hold up much better. And yes, the white torque limiter that attaches to the sep roller can give you lots of problems. If it doesn't have a red marker line on it then it's the old style which will split and provide less resistance.
Why does every customer think they're the first one to ever say: "you've been here so much we should get you an office, ha, ha, ha"?
On a side note, if you want more separation, you would shorten the separation spring, not stretch it.
Think of it this way: the more pressure applied to the separation roller the more the separation roller follows the pickup roller, taking more pages. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

I understand that theory Black Cat, but this isn't the separation clutch spring itself, these are lift springs that droop (because they're too weak to begin with) and they don't LIFT the roller to meet the other rollers.. which in itself causes a gap through the rollers and allows more sheets to feed through. You can tell when these springs are weak when you can remove the jam between the rollers and even when the sep roller is lifted, you can easily pull paper through. Just my 2 cents..

Has anyone else experienced a DIFFERENCE between originals being fed through these things...?? I've noticed that if you print 100 pages from the COPIER itself, and use those as originals through the feeder, it feeds PERFECTLY and never double feeds... Yet, when you use the customer's originals, from Laser or Inkjet printer, it feeds 8 at a time.. what gives? Is it really just static? Or is there something else going on?
I'll run (literally) hundreds of pages printed from the copier, over and over. no problem... what could be different?
