I'm not sure what you are calling the left side. If you are referring to the trailing edge of the paper, and the fuser was recently worked on you might have the two white drive gears on backwards. That would cause the trailing edge to smear across the drum once the leading edge reaches the fuser nip.

thanks for the reply baphomet. its not at the trailing edge. if you have a letter size in landscape position its on the half side of the copy.

Thanks for the clarification. You know, the only other thing I can think of (and it's a long shot) would be the T/S assembly. When the separation wire breaks it will not pop a code, but depending on what the broken wire is touching you can get some pretty strange copies. You might want to take a close look at it. Anything else takes me back to the process unit ... which you have already eliminated.

Yep, sounds like high voltage arcing. Check drum, connections, & frame in rear for broken plastic where high voltage could leak. Hope that helps.
    Hope that helps !

The backgrounding could be poor developer bias. Make sure the leef spring under the developer is in good shape and will make contact with the developer unit. Sometimes they get hung when pulling the developer unit out and it could be mangled. Also if you look at where the line is on the "left" side of the paper does it line up with a buffed looking area on the drum? If so it might be the mag roller bushings are shot and causing the developer brush to buff the drum. This usually happens towards the rear side of the machine. Just a couple of shots in the dark.
