3511 stopped working after network initializing

I have a 3511 that has worked great for 2 year. Today, between prints it acted like it was receiving a print and then locked up. After resetting, it did the same thing. After a few more resets, it finally would get to network initializing and then say to contact service after that. I have tried the reset codes for the network card and that didn't help. I have checked the hard drive and it looks fine except on line C5 it has a value of 4, which i believe that means it has 4 bad sectors? If there is anyone with other suggestions, i would like to try this before i call out a local service guy and spend 500 bux just to get the same end result.

You might have one of three problems.

1. HDD is on the way out and will need replacement and firmware updated.
2. NIC is on the way out
3. Faulty stick of RAM

Try the following to see if it makes a difference.

1. Firmware Upgrade

2. Back everything up that is stored on the HDD. Deparment codes, e-Filing, Address Book, Templates and so on. Then try an 08-690 mode 2. This will format the HDD. Reboot the machine when asked to by the machine and see if that helps.

3. Print out a NIC Config page and then do 08-693 and 08-1119. This will reset the NIC. You will then have to re-enter the IP address and so on.

4. If you send a print job and the copier locks up with the Data light still flashing, there is a possibility that you have a faulty stick of RAM in the machine.

Please don't ask me for firmware or service manuals as refusal often offends.

I have nothing on the hard drive that is really important. Small office and just mainly for coping, printing and faxing. If i just format the hard drive, is there anything i have to reinstall. Not super familiar with this machine. Is the os stored on the hd also? is is built into its flash memory?

Nothing to reinstall after a HDD format. Only if you replace the HDD.

To replace the HDD, you will need to remove the rear cover and shielding plates on the left side rear. The HDD is attached to one of those shielding plates and just needs the IDE and power cables removed.

Size of the HDD doesn't really matter, as long as it is 40GB or more. These HDD's are also PATA, so you can't fit a SATA drive.

Once the HDD has been replaced, you will then need to Partion and Format the drive using the 'Assist Mode' on the copier. From there, you will need to upgrade the firmware.

You will need a service manual to do most of the and the firmware files. If you don't feel real comfortable with doing all this, then I would suggest that you get a tech out to look at it.
