Also if the tires were recently replaced it's easy to not get the spring underneath the separation tire (black) installed correctly.

As far as I can determine, they were not replaced in at least the last 3-4 years

Hi,
The reason the edge of the paper is damaged like that is that there is more separation than there is feed. IE, there is no grip between the upper and lower roller either because of lack of tread or lack of pressure. You say it works better when you press down on the ADF? Sounds like lack of pressure. When the jam lid is closed pressure is applied via springs to the underside of the sep roller shaft so it pushes against the feed tyre. Put a strip of paper a couple of cm wide between the rollers and close the adf jam cover. Try pulling it out backwards and this should give you an idea of how much pressure there is between the rollers.
