e-232 wont boot up or allow service modes

Im back again. Been a busy little poster lately.

I have an e-studio 232 which is frozen on the start up screen. I want to reformat the HDD but can not enter 08 modes, or any other service mode for that matter. There must be a work around for this, but I dont know it. Also I'm pretty sure I can use a bigger HDD than the 40GB thats in there if I need to replace it, but how big is too big for this box to handle?

Generally I use a 80GB disc, but already use a 160GB with no problems.

Never had this problem on this series, but on the bigger 550 and up models, this usually means a problem with the fuser. Swap the fuser and see if you can then get into 08 mode.

Failed Sys board would prevent entering in service mode - one case with e450.

If the hard drive is dead it will also do this. I would try a 40-120gig hard drive and reload the firmware (must do as that is where all the system software resides).
And Star Trek was just a tv show...yeah right!

Am I right in thinking the machine should have fired up with the HDD disconnected?

It will still have power but will not boot up to Ready without the HDD. You'll get some error message. Toshiba ships out the 160gig drives now and they work fine. Id start with replacing the HDD and reloading firmware.
I will not give you service manuals or firmware.

Yeh, I thought when I had the HDD out, the machine would have shown some other symptom, but no change what so ever. Going to replace HDD and firmware as suggested. Will post back later.

    Thank you all.
