Im telling you. The FPGA is detecting a problem with the hardware before the thing even goes to boot.

I tried the ALTBOOT - forced upgrade method. It does not work. It's like if you tore your ram out and tried to ALTBOOT it. I still receive the blue screen of death. I actually had to open the shroud up to see the LED health indicator light.

I assume it is failing at step 4. I would assume the SD CARD, however, I still get the led blinking error.

I would "CHANGE" the SD Card.

This is a "KNOWN" problem with this machine!

    Part No. 160E04222 List Price $63.00 + $15.00 shipping

    Good Luck

Re: Just bought a DoA Phaser 7800 GX

    Just an update.

I replaced the sd card and have the same 6 blink led error. I had a hunch that wasn't the problem as the led blinking indicator shouldn't be giving false positives. I at least have 3 copies of this sd card so I don't have to pay the premium for it anymore.

If you read this, just do a sector by sector copy of the sd card and you won't have to pay the outrageous prices of a simple sd card.

I will be ordering a replacement control panel (which I believe is the issue) and see if that solves it.

    Well.
I replaced the control panel and still have an internal communication failure. LED on the mainboard still blinks 6 times and then repeats.

I'm kind of at a loss at this point.
Maybe the wiring harness is messed up?
The receiving board is no good?

I figured following the manual would have solved it.

Here is a video of what I am working with...

There is UART port for debugging on IP board - page 6-24 from service manual.
May be you show some informations about boot process.

Yeah i saw that. I can pick up a ttl to usb cable. However, capturing that information seemed like a rabbithole. Im not sure if i need special software to read it or not.

Also. I found out that the hard drive that came with the machine is a toshiba 160 gig. Not a hitachi. I am starting to feel like this was an intentional sale of a bad product as the seller has stopped communicating with me.

    argh

Well from everything you have said, and from what you have replaced.

I think it breaks down to only two possible solutions.

    1. The IP board which directly communicates to the control pannel. (Basically the other side of the error code telling you to replace the control pannel.)
    2. Remote possibility the Motor Drive Board.

The only reason I say the motor drive, is that you said you cannot get into diagnostics. You should be able to get into diagnostics even with the IP board removed.
I would pull the IP board and see if you can get into diags.

Let us know how things go.

I pulled the ip board but the control panel doesnt even light up when i do that.
I am assuming youre talking about some external software like pws?
    or the uart serial port?

    regards

Re: Just bought a DoA Phaser 7800 GX

    So another update.
I went to a local Fry's electronics store and cobbled together a "poor man's" usb to ttl rig. After using a multimeter on the J14 connector (pins weren't labeled) and listened in, the machine gave me not much more to go on. Albeit it is expecting a command for me to send to continue the boot process which shows promise but still doesn't solve the POST error.

    Enter ^C to continue booting.

Essentially the same thing the blinking LED told me.

I am starting to think the IP or the BP pwb is toast. The BP pwb is what connects the IP to the Control panel harness and acts as an intermediary. I am leaning toward the BP because the IP has never given me anything to suspect it and has always complied.

If anyone else wants to follow my steps, I got a usb to db9 cable. Then get a db9 to 5-pin j14 pin-out.
ground is pin 5 (the closest to the floor)
    receive is pin 4
    power is pin 3

Here are the settings from the service manual:

Better than paying $200+ for the xerox setup
