    New dynamics in data protection

Data growth continues unabated regardless of the economic climate. In fact, the commercial success of many companies is completely dependent on their data. Data must be protected from a variety of threats and often retained over longer periods of time to comply with company and industry guidelines or increasing amounts of government legislation.
The bottom line is that ongoing, exponential data growth is proving a challenge for the smallest to the largest of businesses, with the greatest of these challenges being the cost of storing and managing this critical business asset. Simply adding more storage capacity is no longer an acceptable strategy, so businesses are looking at ways of using new storage technologies to keep pace in a sensible way.
Over the last decade in particular, there has been a rapid evolution in the capabilities of both tape and disk technologies to keep pace with data growth. The result has been greater flexibility and more choice.
Hype from some manufacturers around the evolving role of disk as a data protection technology, might lead us to suppose that tape technology has “had its day.” However, to believe this is to ignore the value that tape-based data protection can bring as the last line of security for your business data.
This white paper aims to explain why HP recommends tape technology as an integral component to a robust data protection strategy, either on its own, or combined with disk in a disk-to-disk-to-tape (D2D2T) configuration.
