besides drawing a rather good salary i DID get compensated...

And I have been in the industry for just over 48 years and have not heard of it either. The dealer I worked for was a long time member of BTA, Business Technology Association, and its predecessor NOMDA, National Office Machine Dealer Association and had attended many of their conventions and never once saw a booth for them.
