Actually, they weren't taking that away. But you say "giving access" when you should be saying "forcing it on." That's what it was. They forced people to buy something. That's unconstitutional. It's wrong. It might be okay for Canada, but it's not okay in a free country.

I find it amazing how many people think that not having health insurance means not having healthcare. I have had periods where I had no health insurance, but I still had healthcare. I still saw my doctor on a regular basis, I still got all the labs that he ordered. I still got all my prescriptions. It just cost less to pay out of pocket than the least expensive heath insurance I could find. Had the "Affordable Care Act" been in place at that time with its even higher rates, primarily because the law required insurance companies to include coverage that most people will never need, higher deductibles and co-pays, it would have quite possibly bankrupt me.

Your right Healthcare and Health Insurance are different. Good luck if you can afford a serious medical issue or long term treatment with No Health insurance.

At the current pricing structure, my bet would be that if you were in a position at a young age to put back the money that was being spent on health insurance premiums for that "catastrophic even" you mentioned, you would be well ahead of the game paying for that service out of your saved fund.

Health insurance negotiates medical bills down to approximately 35%. It did not take the providers long to figure out that if they tripled the bills, they got what they originally wanted. Insurance companies use those inflated rates as scare tactics as to why you never want to be without coverage. Both sides are screwing you pointing at the other side saying" but they are doing it worse".

My granddaughter had two emergency room events. One was sewing on the tip of her finger when a door got shut on it. They paid for that out of pocket with "self pay discounts" which usually bring the bill to half. A later event was an unsuccessful attempt at getting a bead out of her ear that was covered with the ACA insurance. The copay with the insurance for the later event was greater than the out of pocket expense with no coverage. And that was excluding the premiums. factor that in and the ACA insurance was a royal screwing. Now granted, if there had been long term or more major events, the numbers I am sure would have leaned the other way but catastrophic is more the exception than the rule in my opinion.

One Visit to ER can cost thousands. 10 years ago my MRI was 4000.00 total ER bill was over 5,500.00
There are Millions of American's like me that NEED the ACA coverage benefits. I buy it and PAY for IT through the Marketplace. Without it I could not get Health Insurance for my family!
It's not a question of IF your going to NEED IT. It's WHEN.
Best of luck with No Health Insurance.

Why are you conflating different situations and requirements? Every example you listed is different .

He was commenting on theengel's post about living in a "free" country and being forced to buy health insurance. You are forced to buy car insurance, so not really free.

You're only forced to have financial responsibility if you drive. You want to use the roads created by the government, you have to have insurance. Health insurance is an entirely different thing. I can choose not to drive (many people do--and they don't have car insurance). I can't very well choose not to live. Well, I guess I could, by the left's logic.

I assume there are pre-existing conditions that make it difficult for you to get coverage. My wife is the same. Through the "marketplace", the best deal on her only was $700 per month. Nothing affordable about that. While I feel the prices you paid were badly inflated, they are indicative of healthcare costs. In my opinion, the thing that brings down costs is competition. I believe it would make much more sense to spend the money that the government used to fund the ACA to pump up some of the "charity based" healthcare organizations. If they had the equipment and the means to provide some of the more costly procedures for free or nearly free, the completion could force other providers to evaluate their charges in order to stay in business. If healthcare costs were more in line, then insurance would not be the point of contention that it is currently. Forcing people to buy an overpriced product is not going to lower the price of that product. We put the fish in the barrel for the insurance companies and then act surprised when they started shooting at them!

America has some of the best politicians that money can buy.

                          That is my rant.

And probably the best thing that will happen is having conservative supreme court for next 25+ yrs. Trump will most likely appoint a 2nd judge during his term. This will give complete control of supreme court to conservatives for next generation!!!

it looks like he might have 2 more appointments to SCOTUS ... Ginsburg and Roberts
