California Governor Gavin Newsom announced that the state will sue to block Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs on Mexico, China, and Canada, claiming they harm consumers and businesses in California.
The lawsuit, to be filed in San Francisco federal court, argues that Trump's use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to impose tariffs is "unlawful" without congressional approval, Newsom said in a statement. Newsom and Attorney General Rob Bonta are seeking an immediate court order to halt the levies, citing disruptions to the economy and inflated costs for Californians.
This legal challenge joins at least three other lawsuits already filed against the tariffs. Newsom emphasized California's unique economic vulnerability, being a major exporter of agricultural and tech goods. The state exported $24 billion in agricultural products in 2022 and is home to over 60,000 small business exporters. Newsom, considered a possible 2028 presidential candidate, has previously pledged to shield California from Trump's trade measures by working with international partners to seek exemptions.
