It seems that technicians in the States are held in higher esteem than they are in Blighty.

What are the relocation packages like?!!!

No retirement, but my employer pays 100% of my health insurance premium ($1500 deductible policy). No sick days, 2 weeks vacation and paid holidays. These benifits are not bad in this day and age, but they are ALL less than what I was receiving 10 years ago in this business. I started copier fixin' in 1988.

          Mikadonovan-

Thanks for the feedback - you're right as far as your benefits not being bad in this day and age - many companies are scaling back in an effort to reduce operating costs and in most cases benefits are the first area to see the cuts. I would venture to guess that you, like the majority of us working in the field, are saving on our own - with the economy being so uncertain these days this is proving to be a real challenge - I personally have serious concerns as to whether or not I'll be able to save enough to one day enjoy some level of retirement. It's difficult to imagine that after 20 to 30 years of work there will be little or nothing at all waiting to make that phase of life a little more manageable.

Thanks again for sharing your thoughts on the matter.

Wow! what a variety. I've been fixing copiers for 30 years. Here at my current employer we get:
            No 401k
            No insurance
5 sick days that do not carryover
            1 year, 1 week vac
            1 years, 2 weeks vac
            5 years, 3 weeks vac
No retirement or pension of any type.
Holiday schedules change every year; this year we lost Labor day and Good Friday. We're down to Memorial day, Thanksgiving and the day after, Christmas and New year's day. (the 4th of July is on Saturday this year).
You oughta hear 'em squawk about the overtime, if any.
It looks like I gotta move to California!
