What a great thread, thanks "fixthecopier".
I was watching a show the other day and not only recognized a Canon copier; but, also recoginized the "Ikon Equipment ID sticker" on the front cover. Wow, get a life!
    I know I am a tech because...
Daily, women are telling me how sexy I am because, A. I carry a vacuum cleaner and B. I clean glass like no one else!!
Most people believe that if it ain'tbroke, don't fix it.

Engineers believe that if it ain't broke, it doesn't have enough features yet

Happens to me all the time. Even when I go to my bank and they hand me a paper telling me my bank account is in the red, I usually remark "hey, did you notice your printer needs a new drum?"

I do that all the time. I even tell them what is wrong with my competitors copiers when I am fixing other equipment.

Yesterday I found another one... You might be a tech if you have ever used the unused operator manuals as knee pads while working on their machine.

Never did that. But I usually use those boxes with five new paper reams as stools when servicing machines.

I thought those were stools and people just stored paper in them......
It didn't say that I couldn't do it in the manual.

is there such a thing as used operators manual?

Not to my knowledge. Except for this one time, I had a call to set acess codes on a machine. Before I got there the shop called back and said to nevermind, the customer does not need me now. That was strange, so I went. When I got there, the machine was passcoded and when I went to enter my code, it did not work. When I entered the admin code, it had been changed. I was confused. Then the person in charge came up and ask if I had got the message not to come. I said I did ,but I wanted to check it out anyway. "By the way, why can I not access my machine" I ask. "We changed the code" he said. "How?" I ask. He looked at me like I was stupid, pointed to the drawer under the machine, and said "We looked in the book". I looked at him and replied "Based on my experience out here I would never have guessed that in a million years."

I have done a couple of calls where I walk in, grab the op book and sit in a chair in front of the customer, look up the setting change, make the change, ask "Is there anything else I can do for you?" and leave. It never occurs to them to look it up. Counts as a service call .

                  I love this thread!

You know you're a tech because if you don't solve a problem, you spend the entirety of your evening trying to figure out the problem, even if your other half wants to sit down and watch a movie...

and when i saw the "recognise the model of copier you work on" i actually text my boss a picture message and we made guesses at which actual model it was as the image i sent him was blurred!
Have you tried turning it off and on? No...Oh, it works now!

I saw a very old Canon copier in a sitcom a few weeks ago - think it was a GP200.

I thought, "Is that all the better a machine they could get for a multi-million dollar show?"

It's a sitcom, or cryin' out load.

when you have no room for people to sit in the car, full of parts and junk.

when all your ties are missing missing threads

when you start becoming a pac rat, cause you think every part can be used for something or you can fix the machine that was driving you nuts. don't throw it out as yet, have to fix that sucker.
