You may want to check where their originals are coming from. Often times certain laser printers or even inkjets will not entirely adhere to the paper and could be tracking back into the adf feed assy.

Since this machine is analog, and this RDF is 'recycling' originals, this means that for each copy the original must be scanned (either right feed-slide reading or left feed. In the case of left feed, if you do 100 sets with a 20 bin finisher you scanned the original 5 times. For 200 sets, 10 scans. Now add in duplexing and you can double the number of scans again.

What it comes down to is that you can only 'recycle' an original so many times before it starts to get dirty from the belts. It's unavoidable. The image just rubs off of the paper and get smeared around. It's definitely worse from some printed originals than others. I remember one particular Xerox those originals only took two passes to start rubbing off the toner when the originals were run through a NP6050 style machine.

If you want to prove this to yourself, clean all the belts and tires. You may get 20 'recycles' before you start to see the marks. Now don't clean the belts & tires. The next original will start showing marks after just a few passes.

The only sure cure is to place a digital machine. This analog is getting pretty old, isn't it? =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
        1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
        2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
        3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
        4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
        5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

Feeding right side or left side? I remember the 6650 used to have one of the rollers in the doc feeder break down and turn into gumbo. The replace ment roller shaft had clear rollers, and the one on the machine turned brown before going gumbo

Dr Freedman, if you are using aftermarket fixing rollers in the 6551 the toner will rub off in the feeder if they make copies of the copies. Otherwise it would be the printer were the originals came from. The RDF sep belts are dirty and that is where it is transfering from, but it is not the feeders fault.
Is the glass half full or half empty? I say neither. The glass is obviously full, full of potential. The potential to hold more water or the potential to quench a thirst. Life is all about how you see it.
