customer upset that they have to select tray everytime

on the canon 1600 image runner, where do I select aps(automatic paper select) for hand placed originals? I could not find it in the operator select mode, is it in the tech mode and if so where in the tech mode?

You can change what type of output (copies, faxes, or prints) comes out of which output tray.
    Changing the Output Type:
    1. On the copier control panel, select Additional Functions.
    2. Then select Common Settings.
    3. Scroll down to Tray (or Tray Designation on the Canon Controller based imageRUNNER models).
    4. This will bring up a screen to select the desired configuration. You must select at least one tray for Copy, one tray for Fax, and one tray for Print (depending on which functions your copier supports).

i am looking for automatic paper select from hand placement on platen glass, so everytime you put a original you don't have to move the button to letter.

Auto Paper Select Not Functioning: iR1600 Series
          Approved

          Symptom
          • When making copies off the glass, Auto paper select is not picking the correct paper size. The display reads AUTO and after closing the lid/DF, the machine prompted the User to pick paper size.
          • Auto Paper Select works when using the DF, all paper sizes. The machine having an issue could not recognize A4R off the glass. A4 and A3 worked fine off the glass.
          Action

Performing an ALL CLEAR and PRINTER RESET in service mode, Then cycling power resolved problem.
          • # CLEAR > # ALL CLEAR
          • # PRINTER > # PRINTER RESET
*FYI - Before performing clear, print out the SPEED DIAL and GROUP DIAL list. They will be cleared after the above steps have been done.

"Select Paper Size" Shown On the Display: iR1600 Series
            Approved

            Symptom
"Select Paper Size" message is displayed on the control panel when you are copying from the glass. This message does not appear when using the document feeder.

            Action

Turn on the original detection function in service mode if the machine is so equipped. Check under the platen glass for document detection sensors.
            • #6 SCANNER > 10. MODEL >"TYPE B" and press the OK key. If the machine is not equipped with original detection function, select "TYPE A" and press the OK key.
            • These settings must also be made if replacing the image processor.
