Need a little help on a Canon ImageRunner c5235 Advance

I have been asked to see if I can get a Canon ImageRunner C5235 Advance working properly. I have been able to print from a USB stick via the front USB port (near the menu screen, but on the side of the machine) after figuring out that only a USB stick up to 32GB in size and formatted with FAT32 would work. It prints from the ADF just great and prints from scans too. I have discovered though that it won't print from the USB port that is tucked away behind the printer diagonally opposite to the USB port at the front. I was using a Thinkpad T490 Laptop and I was also trying to install the Canon software but for some reason the printer could not be found when installing the software on the laptop with the USB cable plugged into the laptop and the printer. The cable I was using had the printer plug on one end of the cable (the squarish end) that plugged into the Canon and a regular USB plug on the other end that plugged into the laptop.

Is there a way to determine if the USB port (and ethernet port) on the printer is working correctly? I did test the USB cable with another printer and it worked fine (the printer was able to communicate with the laptop and print). I have printed out a report and everything seems fine with no errors. So am wondering if the circuit board that contains the USB printer port on the printer will need to be changed.

The printer has all the manuals available as well as the driver discs.

I don't remember seeing the UFR option on the Canon website.

Is there a router or switch near the Canon ? I would start connecting the Canon to a LAN port & turn on DHCP.

Once it pulls an IP address you can instal the driver etc etc etc.

No there isn't. So I am looking at getting wireless print server to be able to plug into the ethernet port.

Very easy to do, just use a TP-Link range extender or similar.

What's the difference between a print server and what you posted Copier Tech?

You can use a TP-Link range extender to connect the Canon to an existing wireless network.

No need for a print server.

I just went and got a TP-Link N300 WiFi Extender. I will let you know how it goes with getting the printer up and running on the network, which will be in about two weeks.

Here is an update on what I have been able to do so far and the results.

I got the extender set up to work on the network where this printer is by following the reset procedure for it. I then attached the printer to it via the ethernet port. Then I had to reconfigure the IP address and DNS settings for the printer. I then installed the Canon software and had to manually input the IP address of the printer as the software wouldn't recognize it. I got to the point where I could see the printer in the print dialogue box of any application I was trying to print from. But....

When trying to print a document what would happen is the printer would 'come alive' the data light would blink (receiving data) and then .... nothing.

On top of that the Canon software completely bolloxed one of the computers and knocked out ALL the printers so that no printer was shown in the print dialogue box of ANY application. The only option left was saving it as a PDF. So even the PDF printer that was installed with Tracker Software's PDF Exchange didn't even show.

I spent many hours removing the printer drivers of all printer software on this bolloxed computer using Revo uninstaller then reinstalling the main printer which was a Brother MFC-J4385. All to no avail. In the end the owner had to take the computer to a computer repair shop and have everything wiped and reinstalled. That really annoyed the owner and I was left felling quite mortified that this had happened on my watch, so to speak. I was the one trying to get this Canon to work. In over 25 years of working on computers, that has never happened to me. So this Canon printer has left a very bitter taste in my mouth.

I have left the Canon software on my laptop and would like to know why the Canon would accept data but would not actually print anything out. I haven't given up on getting this printer to work on the network so any additional insights would be much appreciated.

I have been installing Canon drivers for years & never had an instance where it has corrupted a client PC. Maybe the hard drive on the PC was failing so you've just been unlucky.

As a simple test you can use the default drivers built into Windows, something like this one for example.

As the data lights comes on the Canon but doesn't print sounds like it had dept ID codes installed.
