    irc 3480 curling paper

this machine seems to want to curl paper pretty bad. i have rebuilt the fuser, checked nip width and relieved pressure from the fuser. is there a way to lower the standard fuser temp? i saw ways to lower temp for special paper, but not one for regular paper. it may be the paper itself to some extent, but here in sunny florida it is hard to keep paper perfect. i have tried fresh paper, but there still is some curl. please help. thanx

    It might be the paper.

What kind of paper are you using.

Also, what kind of coverage are we talking about.

This may also help/ as SCREWTAPE stated check paper type/ paper is cut either from long grain or short grain on paper supply bolt/

good paper companies list it on package end / i dont' trust cheap paper/ i recommend 28lb paper to all customers on this model =Hammermill if available

      Product : imageRUNNER C3380 / C2880 / C3380i / C2880i / C2550 / C3080 / C3480
      Problem :
In this case the paper would show a ripple effect and a curl from the front to the rear edge when leaving the fixing unit.
Replacing the Fixing unit would not change the symptom.

      Solution :
After removing the fixing drive unit (white gears) found that the rear alignment pin was bent and prevented it from meshing with the lower fixing guide drive gear (brown gear). To resolve this issue the rear front fixing guide hinge plate (FL2-4393-000 / Figure 810, item 59) was replaced to allow the gears to mesh correctly ( *see picture below).

If you will be printing large images or creating publications, choose a heavier weight paper. Higher weight paper is more durable & curls less. I agree with the Hammermill recommendation. Also premium Xerox brand paper is exceptional and I prefer it the most - but it's a bit pricey.

Agreed. In high humidity 100gram paper makes all the difference.

As above from Teckat , if you are suffering from a ripple rather than a curl, on these machines its normally the small orange fuser input roller that has seized / needs lubed.

As suggested by CanonSco, look at the orange roller bushes. Replace or turn around, these will go egg shaped usually after 300K. I greased, turned and it got me out of trouble!
Oh...... I can't copy at the moment then ? !!!!!!

if paper is damp it will curl, even in new package, and yes Xerox paper is good,if loaded properly. I have a humidity problem where i live every year, bigtime. I also adjust in service mode COPIER>OPTION>BODY>FN-ENTMP...set it to -2 or -3....keeps edges cooler and reduces curl

                  No problem from my end.

Did you find what was causing your issue?

i think it is more paper issue than anything else. seems like this model is very picky with paper quality

                      It happens.

There's a lot of reasons why certain media don't work. Pigments, long grain, short grain. You name it.

I've seen top qaulity paper curl up.

The front to rear wave is caused by the fixing drive gears not meshing properly when the guide is closed...as stated the hinge plate gets bent....there is a modified upper duplexing guide available...if customer closes door with delivery guide open hinge plate gets bent. You can oil the orange roller bushings till the cows come and it wont fix it.....Canon issued a bulletin about this in August 2009...you will see 01-07 jams logged also....try what i suggested in my earlier post...you will be suprised how much it reduces curl. This info came from Canon tech support...no bulletin issued. If i told my customers that they had to run heavier paper all the time to minimize this they would get rid of the copier....just an excuse
