Did you verify that toner has been fed to the dev unit?If not try to manually feed toner.
Sometimes new machines tend to be troublesome during installation.

          Hi,

Yet to lay my hands on this machine directly from factory packing.

I might be off the target but, any chance of some packing materials / orange tape at the Dev unit shutter of toner supply or hopper area?

            check this below
            Service Mode > COPIER > I/O > Main Body_DC controller (DC-CON>P001 to P016)
            AddressP002/BIT-# in RED
            6-Developing Assembly Toner Sensor-S25/ 1:Toner presence
5-Developing Assembly Toner Sensor Connect Detect Signal-S25/ 0:Not connect
            4-Sub Hopper Toner Sensor-S26/ 1:Toner presence
3-Sub Hopper Toner Sensor Connect Detect Signal-S26/ 0:Not connect
            2-Hopper Motor Error Detect Signal-M16/ 1:Error
            1-Bottle Motor Error Detect Signal-M17/ 1:Error

The toner presence/absence in the sub hopper is detected by the sub hopper toner sensor (S26) which is a magnetic permeability sensor.
If the developing assembly toner sensor (S25) detects the absence of the toner in the developing assembly, the hopper motor (M16) drives to rotate the toner feed screw to feed toner in the sub hopper to the developing assembly. Also, if the sub hopper toner sensor (S26) detects the absence of the toner in the sub hopper, the bottle motor (M17) drives to rotate the toner cartridge to feed the toner in the Toner cartridge to the sub hopper.
If the sub hopper toner sensor (S26) keeps detecting the absence of the toner for more than the specified period of time, no toner in the toner cartridge is assumed and the message to replace the Toner cartridge will be displayed. Also, if the developing assembly toner sensor (S25) keeps detecting the absence of the toner for more than the specified period of time, no toner in the developing assembly is assumed and a No Toner error message will be displayed.

Was there any resolution to this problem? I have the same model calling for toner after 600 copies.

May or may not be related but we have had problems with a number of canon toners on these and other iR-Adv models where the toner bottle doesn't connect properly in the dev /hopper so doesn't supply toner.

I have found that if you very carefully release the top of the toner bottle then reseat it it will connect and supply toner. Where the prongs are that lock the bottle in place there is a release pin in the center that sticks.
