I had this with a 5051, and replaced quite a few things. Finally tried the laser, and that worked. The black would be washed out and light, no error codes. Every time you rebootd the device it would work for a few days, just like you were saying yours did.

From what I can tell within the service guides for both machines the IRAC 5051 and IRAC 5255 they do not use the same black developer unit.

got this error message last week. went out to check the machine and saw that the error was mostly due to developing unit. came back to the office and grabbed a developing unit, installed in machine everything came up beautiful. 5 days later call from the same person copies are light again. no error code this time just light washed out copies. only on the black the rest of the colors are perfect. ive been through just about everything the machine prompts you to do. replaced the drum just to check no dice.to me it seems like the developer unit has too much toner on the mag roll? would you suggest a brand new developing unit? the one i replaced was from a c5051. im at a total loss. i dont want to put in a order for a brand new developer unit then have it go bad in a week. thanks in advanced, sometimes these machine make me wonder why am i doing this.
