I have generally had success using the smallest USB that will hold the firmware. Another thing: If your machine was made 15 years ago, I probably will not communicate well with a USB3 drive. I use mostly USB2 drives. They may be a little slower, but usually communicate.
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
      1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
      2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
      3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
      4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
      5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

I use 16 gb Samsung 3.0. Never had a problem with branded names. Tried several cheap unbranded from ebay, never worked, not even once.

I use a 64Gb Samsung. It is also important to find flash memory that isn't fake. You can test it with F3 (https://fight-flash-fraud.readthedocs.io/en/latest/).

I've used sizes up to 128Gb (even on 223). The trick is turning off LBA on the FAT32 partition. The Windows format utility will turn it on automatically for drives larger than 4Gb. For whatever reason the boot firmware will sometimes not recognize the firmware on the flash drive if LBA is on.

With the i series KM recommends the Transcend USB. I use a 16 gb and have other smaller Transcend sticks. Maybe its because the i series had issues with updates and these seem to work without jumping through flaming hoops. Regardless use HP's format program and yes it does make a difference, depending on the USB its the difference between updating the machine or you pulling your hair out.

Works well with C224 and above, including C3350/BH4050. However I can't recall if I tested them with C220/BH223 series.

Never had any problems with sticks since i use hp_usb_disk_storage_format_tool-2.2.3

                  First put in USB Stick

                  Run CMD
                  Type diskpart
Type List disk then press enter
Determine which disk is the USB stick (Be really careful here!) Type Select disk * (select disk 1 / 2 / 3 ...)
                  Type clean then press enter
Type convert GPT then press enter
Type convert MBR then press enter
                  Type clean then press enter

Use HP Tool to format the stick.

                  I use 2/4/16/32/64GB sticks

I can confirm that we have been successful using the 64GB version of this drive as well.

Yes, they should work - 32GB versions are getting harder and harder to find - but...
Most older machines supported USB memory up to 32GB - so you have to trick the machine into thinking you are using smaller memory.
So remove any existing partitions from the brand new memory, then create a primary partition smaller than 32GB, and for any unused space, create an extended partition, and then a logical partition within your extended partition. You can then use the extra space for documentation, rarely used firmware or other files.

I've used a 256GB NVMe disk in an Orico USB enclosure split in a similar way as a USB memory replacement for firmware upgrades, and it's worked without problems in most cases.

I've never had any luck using anything larger than 16GB on the i-series, even after running the HP format tool.
