if you start downloading the firmawre and the fiery HDD can't be formatted then it's fubar, otherwise it should be OK.
Also if the fiery HDD format takes longer than a few minutes it's a sign the HDD's on the way out.

Given the couple of hours it takes to reload the fiery software I would replace the harddrive and then reinstall the software. It will only be a small laptop HDD (IDE type) and they should be cheap enough. You may find the old HDD will be OK enough to put in an old laptop or something (they seem to be much less fussy about errors).

      Enjoy!

Hard to tell in the machine, if you go to the local electronics store you can get an IDE converter to plug into the fiery HDD and do a disk check from a PC.

Other things to check - make sure all the cooling fans inside the fiery case are working and aren't noisy - can overheat things. Do check all the plugs and such too (remove/replace).

            The 20 gig hdd's don't last long. Toshiba's i think... piece o crap.
            We use 40 gigs now.
Make sure you use the "program files IEEE/1284 parallel port driver" before downloading, makes it much faster, from 2hr to 15-20 min.

                Fiery HD Problem

You can find the detailed instructions on installation of a new HD at:

                Index of /protectedmembers/060905/x3e

Hope this helps. As the previous responders say:
any good 20-40gb 2.5" HD will do the job.
