we always just wipe down the fingers and the board to remove whatever dust, hair etc, apply new "floil" grease over the contact area and the fingers, good to go for years to come.
Its easy enough to test just by placing some sheet of paper to satisfy the presence sensor, then make small movements with the guides and watch the "preview" area of the screen to see the detected size and look for wacky results.

This same sort of arrangement was used on the FalconI and FalconII paper tray width. Since the guides were usually in only one position you'd get corrosion at that single contact point. Just sliding the side guides back & forth a few times would scrape away some of the corrosion, making it read correctly ... for a while. =^..^=Leave a comment:

To simulate the problem, put the machine in Copy mode and insert a LTR original in the DP tray. The display will show the original size detected. If you wiggle the side guide a little you can see the size flicker to STMT-R.
When its working properly you should have ~5/8" of movement before the size changes. =^..^=
I did almost exactly that but I didn't giggle the guides. I just slid them back and forth and tried to duplicate the error with no success. I should have thought to giggle them. I should be paying you for all this information. lolLeave a comment:

Common on Alphards, Letter originals will detect as STMT-R.
That width detection comb makes a poor connection. IF you choose to bend the comb, bend only a little, gently, with a flat tool like a knife blade. I have had one break from being too enthusiastic.
Clean the PWB contacts with alcohol or contact cleaner. I do use a small dab of the black conductive grease on the comb. You cannot short anything out. The comb just connects two or more of the contacts to indicate the paper width.
They've been using this same sort of contact set all the way back to the Mita DC513 lens position PWB (~35 years).

These sensor boards were a common replacement item. Comes with its own tub of grease. Replace, grease, problem solved for the life of the machine. Often I would also replace the copper contact..Leave a comment:

Usually customer error
they open the guide and insert paper but fail the push the guides together again and or customer stacks paper over the rear sensor.

I've had 2 calls lately where the ADF tray was reading the incorrect size paper.
When I took apart the tray, there's a electrical grid, so to speak, that's comprised of electrical traces on a circuit board. A series of copper fingers slide along the grid to determine the width of the paper and these electrical signals are fed back to the main pwb of the doc. feeder.
I was gonna put conductive grease on the traces but they are much too close to one another and it would short the traces. I'm starting to think the problem has nothing to do with grease of any type but rather the fingers that slide along the traces simply don't have enough pressure on them. Maybe the solution is to simply bend the fingers to allow more pressure?
Thoughts?
BTW: These are DF-772/Kyocrea.
Edit: The difficulty is that the problem is intermittent. It may work fine for a couple of weeks and then malfunction. But it always works when I'm there. The customer will show examples of where it's cutting off the scans. I can tell it thinks a different size paper is in the tray. I'm gonna try bending the fingers down to apply more pressure and we'll see what happens.
