Kyocera scan - Do I need a server

Stupid question: I have 5 independent computers in 5 offices - no server or workstation set up. I have the Kyocera 3035 w/ scan/network card. I also have a Linksys router hooked to the copier. I just want to be able to Scan to PC (i.e., each PC owner wants to scan to his computer).

The copier tech is saying I need to be networked, with an internet connection. Really? You mean I can't utilize a simple wireless router set up to route the scanned document to any one of the other computers (who have wireless adaptors) via the router?

    Thanks for any input.

    Scanning

If the copier is hard wired to the the router, and the computers connect wirelessly to the router scanning should not be a problem. You will need to have the Scanner File Utility (availiable on KM website) installed on each computer that you wish to scan to. You will have to have static IP addresses on all the computers due to how the copier scans. I do not think that it should be a problem. If you have the Scanner Utilities Disk that came with the optional scan system you should have all programs and documentation you will need to accomplish this.

Hey, thanks for your input. The router is hard wired. I will try the static IP address. and hope that with the right combination of tweaks, I will have the ability to have scan to pc available for all pcs (again, w/out a server setup).

I am getting into the copier command screen from my pc using the DHCP to auto configure ip addresses, so that seems to be a positive sign - but I am fearful that in the command screen, I will be required to fill in boxes calling for server info - as a matter of fact, trying to clear this info from the prior owner of the 3050 seems to call up an error code when I go to save (register) the info on the screen.

I have done a lot of research on the net and this forum and keep coming up with references to the scan to pc working only in the context of the SMB protocol. Is that true? If so, does that preclude the Linksys setup I am trying to employ?

Surprisingingly, I had no problem doing this set up on an inexpensive (sub $300) multifunctional HP tabletop copier - but hopefully, will not be precluded from doing this on a $4000+ Kyocera MFU.

        The 3035 and the 3050

These two machines are WAY different when setting up scanning. Here is what I would do. Install Scanner File Utility on the computer that you are wanting to scan to. Set up the Scanner file utility. Assigning Folder number to the folder you wish to save the scan in. Start the utility. Go to the copier. Go into scanner settings, and set up the user. Use the same number that you used when setting up the folder at the compter. When setting up the user it will ask you for the IP address where the Scanner File Utility is running. Put the IP on the computer that you just installed the SFU on. Then it should work. Repeat the process for the other 4 computers. It is easy, but a little confusing the first 50 times I did it. Hope this helps.

          Clarification

I am talking about the 3035 not the 3050. If you are using a 3050 then it is all different. There is a thread on this site that has a video showing you how to do it if it is the 3050. Good luck!

Sorry about the mistyping of the model #- should have typed 3035, not 3050.

Am at the office now - bought a new Linksys router - the old one stopped broadcasting for no reason.

Will forge ahead and report results.

              Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Don't forget to go to the Windows Firewall and add the SFU to the list of exceptions or it'll block it.

All is well! Updated the scanner utility, set up each pc one by one, taking stock of IP addresses, the firewall trap (many thanks re: same) and with encouragement from the first reply, dived into the copier's service menus as well as the copier's network control/set up screen.

Once I was able to get into the copier's network card set up screen via the wireless router (typing IP address of the copier's network card into internet browser's URL), I knew this handshake thing was a good sign and that the rest would follow.

On the copier's network command center/console, I just left the copier network settings alone - even the prior owner's server and web/internet access settings - just left it - and no problems ensued.

I was really worried that setting up a server network was a requirement to run the scanner for each pc, given all the fill in boxes seeking server/internet settings on the Kyocera's network card set up screen; to add to my earlier anxiety, the tech said the set up could only be accomplished with an internet connection involved (Kyocera has a web site that you interact with in the set up routine - mostly for the "scan to e-mail" function that I had no interest in).

This would have been a drag given my set up: the pcs in the offices having different internet providers, no internet line feeding into the copy room, and noone wanting or needing their PC's hooked into a server.

Didn't even have to set up "static IP" on the Linksys router set up screen - just set it to DHCP and let Linksys auto set each PC's IP address. Pretty straightforward.

The scanner utility setup on the pc set is really brief - just assign the pc a three digit # (001, 002, 003 ..), assign the pc any name (need not be the pc's "user name") and set up a directory on the c drive (i.e., c:\KYOCERA, via the fill in box. That's it as far as settings needed on each pc. (Oh yeah, don't forget the window's firewall head slap - vexing if you forget this).

Kyocera's support site regarding set up of the scanner/printer utility could use an FAQ regarding this scanner configuration alternative - would really help the techs I think.

                      scan

You can use computer host name also if you configured DNS
Many places will not be on static ip addressing

Host name is found in my computer , computer name tab
click change and copy and paste name

                      should work fine

Host name can be found also by cmd command line and type host name
