What do you mean by a different controller?

i think he means did you try putting in a different controller board in the copier, then print to it.

standard practice is to always hook up a laptop directly to the pc. if you have the same issue, then you have a potential hardware failure.

I had a problem like this where if I reset the machine it would print for a few hours and then stop. It turned out that the NIC card was getting ARP storms from a work station. I hooked up a network switch between the MFP and network and it took care of the problem

This is not always dependable. I had a customer with a similar problem with a new install. A tech from their new IT company and I tried three different fixed IP addresses and all gave the same problem but DHCP did not. Thinking that it might be laptops that were using fixed IP, I ran a network analysis on the network to see what equipment were on the network and the IP addresses they were using. What I found was a VPN host that was using 5 IP address for remote access, the IP addresses we tried for the MFP were the first three. The IT didn't know about it because it was not in the initial documentation they given. They had only had the account for two week and were still trying to map out everything that was there. The customer was a county water agency but didn't think about the fact that people from the county did access the network remotely. County used to do all the IT functions remotely.

The network may have been split into two subnets. The VPN may have routed to the second subnet.

They have a really simplistic network - basically 10 PCs plus some IP phones and two printers behind a consumer Netgear firewall. I'm going to speak to the printer company tomorrow and see what they think -they got it to print once, but we also had a few test pages print out when we first got onsite, but never again. It certainly could be something software-related on the network, since this just popped up suddenly. I'll try a switch and printing directly to the PC, and then try adding in additional PCs to see which one is the troublemaker.

You mentioned IP phones...had a client who used the "switch" port on the back of the IP phones and it did just this, the printer would just stop printing. The printers were put on their own cable run and problem solved.

Are the PC's connected with Cat 5/6 copper cable or WiFi? If using WiFi then check that WinX is not using "power saver mode" on the WiFi drivers, as this will shut off the wifi when not in use and the printers will be disabled.

They're all hard-wired. The printer has its own drop straight to the switch (in the same room). Many of the computers go through their Digium phones, but this has worked for several years and nothing changed. Vendor came out today and reproduced the problem - don't know what the outcome was yet.

Ok, so went onsite today - plugged laptop directly into new workgroup switch with only printer plugged in as well. Problem still happened, exactly as before - could ping, browse WIM, just couldn't detect the printer port. I set the printer to 10Mbps full duplex (after I noticed the 100Mbps light was out on the switch), so I think it's having negotiation issues. If I added the printer with a new local TCP/IP port, waited for it to time out, and selected generic network card, a test page would print after several minutes. So, this probably indicates a controller issue, correct?

Firstly, if the printer was not detected, you should have selected "Ricoh network printer type C" rather than Generic.
Secondly, why would you not connect the printer directly to your laptop in order to take all of their network hardware entirely out of the equation, as was suggested in the first reply to your post. If, and until you do that, in my opinion there is still no telling whether it's actually the machine or not.
Since you can still ping and browse the WIM. My money's still on something within their network

It was a completely new workgroup switch, not their existing switch - the odds of both switches being bad are infinitesimal. The only common thread at this point is the printer itself - everything else was swapped out (cables too). On neither switch would the printer negotiate 100Mbps half or full duplex.

Whip out your crossover network cable and plug it directly into the MFD and directly into your Laptop/PC.
Set the PC lan network IP-address to the same IP address as the "gateway IP address" on the MFD.
Set the subnet masked both the same for Your PC and MFD. Don't worry about any DNS settings with a cross-over cable.

Run some tests, eg, print, scan, ping WIM.

What version of windows is on your Laptop/PC. You'll have problems with scanning WIN,7,8,10 if the firmware is not uptodate on the MFD.

What would this show or prove vs plugging into a brand new network switch with only my laptop plugged in? Laptop was configured with a static IP on the same subnet as the printer, could browse, ping, etc., just not add printer. Or in other words, if it worked with the cross over cable but not plugged into the stand alone network switch with only the laptop, what would that indicate was wrong? Keep in mind this is a brand new Trendnet 5 port switch with brand new cabling.
