It's the usual process of elimination. We can be certain that the switch is not causing any problems. The forum would like to follow along with exactly where your upto. What software is installed on your PC ? Is the print spooler service running on your PC, are you behind a firewall. Are you using Netbios over TCPip, Is your network security/virus ware blocking ports ? Does your PC have the correct printer driver installed ?

All the above is part of the process of elimination, ie if your hardware tests fine then we look else where...

If it's hardware resetting the NCS might fix it....

No, there's not - the printer, and my laptop was connected, with a static IP on both. No router involved, cross my heart and hope to die.

This issue spontaneously started impacting all 10 PCs onsite - they've been working prior for over two years with no issues. On my laptop, the issue is that when you go to add the printer, and do a local port with TCP/IP, it doesn't see the printer on the network - there are no drivers involved. If I send a test page after waiting for timeout and installing the latest drives from the Ricoh website, it will print after several minutes, if I have the printer set to 10Mbps full duplex. My Windows firewall is not blocking outbound connections to the printer, and no gremlins went to each of the 10PCs in the office and turned on port blocking for outbound 9100, to the best of my knowledge. There is no domain, so no GPO modifications took place, and the issue happens with only my laptop and the printer. How is this anything but a printer issue?

I set the printer to 10Mbps full duplex (after I noticed the 100Mbps light was out on the switch), so I think it's having negotiation issues. If I added the printer with a new local TCP/IP port, waited for it to time out, and selected generic network card, a test page would print after several minutes. So, this probably indicates a controller issue, correct?

If the switch is not connected to their network, then what is the point of having it there. If your laptop is less than 5 years old it should be auto negotiate on the Cat5 jack. You most likely do not even need a cross over cable. Just connect a standard 7ft cat5 cable between the laptop and the C4500. If you get a link light on both, you do not need anything else. If you still doesn't find the printer, the port control chip on the control board is bad. Ping and WIM do not use the same port as printing. TCP/IP printing uses port 9100, 9101 and 9102 depending on whether LPT 1, 2 or 3.

The switch was there as a diagnostic tool - I wanted to isolate the printer from everything else on their network, in case it was a bad print job in a queue, or something like that. The issue happens regardless of what the printer is plugged into, and it started happening after some big storms that rolled through Houston earlier last week (as the customer told me today). I believe the printer vendor tech did the direct connect test with his laptop, and had the same issue.

The only way to isolate from everything is to connect directly.

Ok, so since the vendor tech told me he did direct connect and had the same issue, now what? If you can't directly add the printer in windows via a local tcpip port when directly connected, what would be the issue? Controller?

If the vendor could not pint when directly connected, you ask the vendor why he/she did not fix the problem with the printer.

Fair enough - I actually did call the vendor tech and told him the work around wasn't sufficient. My concern is that if there was damage of some sort, it could get worse over time. I have seen situations where the printer didn't show up when detecting the port from within windows add a printer dialog and that's never been a good thing. I'll post back the results after they replace the controller.

Okay some one did a Laptop-MFD test previous, could have informed us earlier.

Deaf Tx/Rx line in the NIC?
I've seen this before ,like the network switchs down to half duplex.

Storms in the area are definately no good for comms gear.

My apologies - I didn't hear back from that tech until later yesterday. I really appreciate all of the help here - I will provide closure once the vendor gets back with us.

I take it from this that you are the IT provider. Information that should been included in first post.

Ok - I'm not sure of the difference it would have made with regards to the diagnostic information, but that information was on the first page of the thread when I mentioned involving the printer vendor.

Most of the suggestion that have been given are advice that we give to copier techs trying to determine if the problem is theirs or ITs. The direct connected laptop, an item that copy techs have with because service manuals and parts catalogs are all in pdf format, is the best test.
