If I jiggle the tray two plastic shield, it does NOT manage to work itself off, but it doesn't take much "jiggling" to have the
    tray one shield come off.
There was a bulletin out at one time concerning a similar problem on one of the MP models that use the same type feed. It had to do with replacing some of the bushings the feed modules. Since you have to remove the paper feed module to modify it, it might be easier to just replace the feed module with a new one.

Sorry for not knowing the proper names of the parts.

I have 4 trays on the c820dn but we really only use the top two and sometimes the 3rd (I have labels in that one). Would I be able to
swap something from tray 1 with tray 4?

Someone mentioned a clutch? Is this easy to replace? Costly?

      Thanks.
some feed sections are spot specific.. not sure about this model. i know on some of the older models that was not an option tho.
clutches aren't costly.. time to pull feed section and replace and be time consuming ... can't you just use the other trays for now?

Did you swapped paper feed unit 1 to tray 2 and 2 to 1 and test them? This can be tested quickly.
If you have the pf unit at disassembly in hand so check the right position of the white FEED GUIDE again.
When the problem ocours from tray 2 with the swapped pf unit 1, the machine need a new paper feed unit.
When the problem stays to tray 1, the machine need a new MAGNETIC CLUTCH (AX200289).

If you have to order, order these:
          AF030090 Pickup roller
          AF031090 Feed roller
          AF032090 Sep roller

Also, use a rubber cleaner (or alcohol) to clean the rubberized reg roller (the long black roller under the blank belt, can be gray from paper dust) and the transport/relay rollers on the feed unit and opposites.
I have replaced several paper feed units due to one way clutches beeing worn, but try feed rollers and cleaning first.
No good advice. Now I know why the rollers do not last long in your experience.
Ricoh long life rollers should always be cleaned with water first. Rubber cleaners or alcohol shorten the life of the rollers.
