    SC 820

    Symptom:
    Self-Diagnostic Error: CPU
The central processing unit returned an
    error during the self-diagnostic test.

    Possible Cause:
    Controller board defective
    Software defective

Try reseating the controller board and everything on it. If possible try reloading firmware. If neither of these work there is a good chance the controller board will need to be replaced.

If it has a fax option try removing the fax option. If the error goes away, it's the fax fcu. Also had an incidence of an op panel causing an 820.

With the 990 code as well I would try reloading firmware first and reseating everything like Ricoh-ono suggested.

Relax! This firmware injection won't hurt...but it will take 45 minutes.

Savin, Ricoh, Gestetner etc. doesnt matter. Sounds more like you have a defective fax board.

As my experience, reload controller board might help for a time but sc 990 will come back. Change the OPC drum if it over 150.000 copies is better way although ricoh error code doesn't mention about change OPC drum, only software problem for sc 990 .( It is strange ).
              Hope this helps.

I dont get the code whaen i have the savin prnt clr installed, just the ricoh prnt clr?? the fax works with the original prnt clr. sc820 when i install the ricoh prnt clr. In the original savin config the mach had no print or scan, though the units are the same, i guess its e promm??
i switched thee proms out and the same thing, is there a fax bit switch for the conversion?

The pc doesnt have different p/n for various nrg machine but try the plug and play in SP5907. Match it to the controller you're installing.
