IMC 4500 SPDF taking more than one page

    Hi all,

Installed an IMC 4500A at a new customer who had a xerox previously.
They have logged multiple calls for DF taking more than one sheet at a time and jamming.

We swapped out torque limiter and reverse roller in case they were faulty from factory (as we put new ones on it before install), this made no difference. We went back and put a whole new DF on it and tested seemed ok.
They logged it again days later. We found a bulletin about this happening on this model and there was a modified (longer) friction pad you can fit that stops this. Fit that and it didn't work either. Firmware was still on latest version. Can't find any other bulletins or info about this. Have tried everything we can think of/find info on.
The paper is often sent to them folded in half, they straighten it and scan it. In classic fashion - their previous machine never had this fault.
As a means to get them by, we told them to scan everything short edge first and defaulted scanning to rotate 90 degrees so it comes through the right way. This seemed to work a lot better, but they have now complained that machine is still doing the same fault though on multiple types of paper, no pattern to it.
Spoke to Ricoh technical they suggested a paper feed shaft/gear assembly which I fitted earlier today, plus cleaning shafts etc.
To me scanning normal pages and headed pages is fine, it is when I scan pages that are sent to them folded in half, which they then straighten and scan. So there is a slight crease down the middle of the pages. To me this is the issue... but some of you guys customers must do the same thing so has anyone else had a problem like this before?

    Any help much appreciated.

you have done everything that had to be done, if the spdf is used a lot, try to check that a "depression/recess" has not formed on the plastic of the lifting tray, right at the point where it touches the grip roller that lowers, it could create problems.
then there is a sp that slightly slows down the speed of the spdf, this could help you, you can't see it by eye...unfortunately I don't remember which one it is, but you should easily find it in the manual, in the sp section.
let us know what jam code you have

haven't had this specific issue but in the past with certain accounts that do large batch scanning of a "Special" type of originals we have tweaked the original settings to slow down the scanning speed. 2 instances come to mind.

1st instance - Power line company that had to scan 11x17 work orders that was heavier than 20lb, folded in middle, had a perforated edge, and were often dirty/weathered from being filled out in the field. In their case the problem was jamming. We created them a program that adjusted the orientation so the perforation was on the trailing edge, increased resolution to 300 dpi to slow down the speed, and set to mixed originals so there was a pause between feeding each sheet.

2nd instance - Hospital that had a generic form 20lb letter but a label was attached to the top right corner with the patients information. Again this was more to deal with jamming not multi feeding. We had to adjust the orientation so it fed SEF with the label to the trailing edge and set to 600 dpi to slow the scanning speed as much as possible.

While neither completely resolved the jamming issues entirely it lessened it to an extent the customer was satisfied with the solution. Obviously they were expecting way too much from a Business class copier.

luca72 I know what you mean about the recessed part of the lifting tray, we have seen that on DF before that must have scanned hundreds of thousands of pages. It is not on this DF though.
Leoculus I probably will have to try putting it on 'silent mode' and maybe up the dpi from 300 to 400. It is already set to scan everything double sided and remove blank pages which does slow it down a bit too and was helpful anyway as most originals were double sided.
Slowing it down will annoy the customer, but hopefully less than what jamming does
