Sounds like someone changed a setting at the control panel.

That is what I thought and I checked the settings and it is on Auto Detect.
Not sure if there is something else.

AFAIK there are two main possibilities:
-The endusers inconsistently load their originals LTR or LTR-R, or inconsistently setting the original width guides, and expect the machine to just "...figure out the right way for it to display."
-Some or all of the information they are providing you with is false.

Either way, unless they can DEMONSTRATE the issue, it's probably operator error. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
          1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
          2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
          3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
          4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
          5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

AFAIK enabled OCR can also mess with the orientation

              Hello

You need to check the settings. Most likely it's been changed. Correct it and set as new defaults

Thanks, it is set to Readable direction but makes no difference.

I would say if the orientation is set to the right direction and if when you are running scanning tests the scans are coming in the right direction in the folder then it's 1 of 2 things

                  1) it's user error. Possibly 1 of the users are not using the machine correctly.
Maybe print out a note and stick it on the machine. Detailing how to scan and how insert originals with a diagram of the original direction and direction of writing.

                  2) Firmware faults. Try a firmware update

Also: try sticking around at the customers place for about an hour or two just to observe how they are using the machine.
                  And
Give them a tutorial again on how to use the machine. Shocking how many times I've given customers tutorials on how to use their machine. Even after having their machine for more than 4 years some of them still don't know how to load paper properly.
                  And
In an office with multiple users, someone can be new and not know how to use the machine.
Lastly: is scan to email also doing the same thing?

I wonder, could it be something only available when the scan to OCR option is installed? Determining readable orientation would necessary for OCR conversion.
