Laser Unit synchronization maybe! I have seen that sometimes back in the days of MP C2500.
    It recovered itself somehow...

I was thinking so too. Maybe laser unit, I don't have it 4503/5503/6003 to interchange. Only have 3003/3503 which isn't the same.

I must be missing something here. If you print a black/white only does it work or is it blank? Black is the anchor for alignment and everything. It should be coding if black is not working.
If you do a black/white skyshot and interrupt the copy, pull the itb and black pcdu, what do you see?

Print/copy on black is blank. Even interrupting the copy no traces on ITB everything blank.

Have you checked the K laser shield glass? If it is covered its entire length with dust or toner you will get no write.

I don't know of any way to test the laser, maybe at least take it out to inspect it. Maybe poor connection at the laser. If that doesn't help, trace it back to the board and reseat that too.

One more idea. Update the firmware, then maybe it will show an SC code to help you troubleshoot.

Also, go into service mode and check VD, compare to the other colors. maybe not getting any charge voltage.

There is a knowledge base on missing black on a few of the Ricoh color machines. They point at the ITB black primary transfer roller. You have swapped ITB's so I think we can rule out the ITB, that leaves us with the connection point from the high voltage to the ITB. The knowledge base talks of poor connection to ITB due to the terminal or wire running back to HV. The KB does not indicate a service code being produced, sounds similar to what you have. Check contact point for the black primary bias roller where the ITB meets the machine frame. Then ohm out the frame contact to the hv board. That is pretty much what the KB says.

Be nice if it coded something.

I found another reference, but it is to a color being "light"

The bias terminalbreaks when thePCDU is removed,so thedevelopment biasis too high or toolow. The shape of the followingparts was changed:Gold plate in the rear of thePCDU which contacts the biasterminal Bias terminal springon the mainframe.

You have swapped pcdu's, but how is the bias spring on frame side?

Developer bias could do it. No charge on the drum would yield an all black print (write to no charge). SP 2005 can set the DC Bias voltage for when Process Control is off. The SP for turning Process Control used to be 3041but is not listed in the service manual for the Metis. It may have been moved to Factory SP.

I agree with slimslob, if it were a problem with the PCU contacts, the image would be black, so it is necessarily a problem with the connection of the development group, and that's where we need to investigate!....if it were the laser, with all the controls it does it would generate a SC

try replacing the rear plastic cover of the pcu, and take a look at this bulletin, if this is your case

                        How did it end?...I'm curious

I hadn't wanted to comment because I think my case is stupid, but something curious happened to me on a 4503.

They called me for an almost invisible copy or print that later became completely non-existent, it came out completely white, the page was clean in black prints or copies.

I thought immediately...developing unit (sometimes its pinions or shaft are damaged, it does not ask for toner because the developer has precise toner on top of the sensor.

The next day it arrived and IT IS GOOD.

I thought: something is happening, they tried and tried and very good, black good.

vahhh I take advantage and do maintenance...and doing so, I discover that the fuser sleeve was broken, but not enough to jam and apparently to cause a power short.

I had a used sleeve so I put it on but I didn't change the bushings...just like that 15 later the same thing...invisible copies in black.

                            broken sleeve.

I had bushings, a new generic sleeve and that's it... that damage generated something, an electrical short, I don't know, but it disabled the black.

Am suspecting the laser, but don't have under laser to test. 3003/3503 and the same with 4503/5503/6003
