Can't find 00-23, but 0-23 in the fax service manual is:

    Too many errors during reception:

    • Check the line connection.
    • Check the FCU - NCU connectors.
    • Replace the NCU or FCU.
    • Defective remote terminal.
    • Check for line noise or other line problems.
    • Try asking the other end to adjust their tx level.
    • Try adjusting the rx cable equalizer setting and/or rx error criteria.

    Cross reference
    • Rx cable equalizer - G3 Switch 07 (PSTN)
    • Rx error criteria - Communication Switch 02, bits 0 and 1

I'd go for a new fax cable first, check the socket it's plugged into as well.
It's 106 miles to Chicago. We've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses.

    Hit it.

I've also had surge protectors cause these, make sure they aren't running the phone line through one. If that doesn't do it, then usually adjusting the equalizers to high will do it.

If surge protectors cause this they have their phone surge diode blown probably or are cheap. Surge protectors have saved us over a dozen fax boards over the years.

Well, I take mine off all surge suppressors and have had to replace 1 fax board in all my years of working on machines, this includes the RFG, Minolta, HP and Panasonic.

I had a customer complaining of intermittent errors and partial transmissions. I could hear a crackle in the line when I selected the hook button. The phone line was plugged into the ESP box (that Ricoh supplies). I disconnected it and all was fine. I don't find many people using the surge protectors for the phone and network lines though.

Most of the times I had problems with the surge supressors was long distance faxing is when it mostly happened. that's what we use also, the ESP's. It degrades the signal just enough to cause communication errors and half pages.

If you go into fax sp mode you can print out the service monitor report. The lower half of the page will have all the recent fax error codes. I would change all the bit switches recommended in the fax portion of the service manual. These are very common on all Ricoh digital copiers with a fax option. We change these bit switches on all machines.

Got a Quick Handy list of recommended switches? I hate having to dig them up because they are usually in the Customer Fax Manual and not the Service manual.

We require all customers to have a surge protector and highly recommend the fax being routed through it. I've never had customers with issues through the surges we use. We use SUPER7TEL - Protect It! Surge Suppressor and they've been good. Saved some machines, didn't save a few boards. But TrippLite has always paid us when we make a claim.
